In play The Piano Lesson, written by August Wilson, Boy Willie devises a scheme for buying Sutter’s land. Boy Willie has one part of the money saved up. He will sell the watermelons for the second part. Then he will sell the piano for a third part. The only debating issue in Boy Willie’s scheme is the piano. Berniece his sister does not want to sell the piano. This is the only reason for a defense in Boy Willie’s scheme. Therefore, I will defend Boy Willie’s issue of selling the piano and how that liberates him in reference to his scheme for buying Sutter’s land.

The first defense is the usage of the piano. In Wilson’s novel, Berniece never uses the piano, Boy Willie “You can’t do nothing with that piano except sit up there and look at it”, Berniece, “That’s just what I’m gonna do” (Wilson 50). The piano is a “sentimental value” (p.51) to Berniece. Her father died over the piano. Boy Willie argues even though the piano is of sentimental value, Berniece is not using it. He wants to sell it in order to buy land, seed, and workers, which will in turn produce a crop, and something, will come out of that.

The second defense is that of equality. Boy Willie believes how a certain individual perceives himself determines what that individual really is in reality (Wilson). He also believes that white men have one advantage over black men and that is, “The colored man can’t fix nothing with the law” (p.8). Boy Willie desires to be equal to the white man (Wilson). Also, equality ties into the above paragraph in which Berniece does not use the piano. Boy Willie will use the money from the piano along with the profit from the other two sources and get his land. Obtaining this goal will make him equal to the white man (Wilson). Boy Willie will never work for anyone other than for himself.

The last defense is that of Boy Willie’s father. Boy Willie admires his father. He remembers one key thing about his father as a child, “I got these big old hands but what I’m gonna do with them?” He feels that the piano was his father’s gift to him (Wilson). Boy Willie’s grandfather did not have anything to leave Boy Willie’s father but Boy Willie’s feels that his father left him the piano. He uses this in one argumental conversation against Berniece (Wilson). Boy Willie strongly feels that if his father had the opportunity to possess his own land then his father would have sold the piano (Wilson).

Throughout the novel Boy Willie and his sister, Berniece, struggle over the conflict in the selling of the piano. Boy Willie doesn’t want to follow the rules. He lives but what he believes is right and true (Wilson). Boy Willie doesn’t want to live quietly and go long with the way everything is. He wants to leave his mark everywhere he goes (p.4). I believe the above paragraphs well defend Boy Willie’s arguments with the issue with the piano. Everyone, regardless, who you are, wants to become something more. Everyone has dreams. Just like Boy Willie has his, but his sister Berniece is standing on the way and won’t let him do it. She is not doing it because she hates her brother, but she doesn’t want lose memory of her father and piano is the only thing that she has from him. His sister also blamed Boy Willie for killing her husband, and he never believed that the ghost is in her house until the ghost came out and scared Boy Willie to death. At the end of the play Boy Willie leaves without the piano and that was good thing because he showed respect for his sister and saw how much piano mean to her. Respect for his Father who died over it.

It is something everyone wants, not many have, and few want to give. Most people would appreciate just a little bit, and most should give just that. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, this does not happen. Perhaps this is because the concept of respect is not understood. What exactly is respect? The dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard. This does not explain what it is; it only outlines what it may be. In play Burning Chrome girls would do anything just to become somebody else. Girl named Bobbie slept with the guy just to get the money to do her eyes for chubby city. In this play nobody has respect for others. That’s why person can divide respect in couple different meanings.

The first is the respect of others. Others includes your peers, teachers, parents, and everyone else. It is adding a maam or sir to the end of a sentence. It is obeying in class and not being rowdy in the hallway. It is the respect of their ideas and what they stand for. It is what brings people together, and if not used, it is what can tear people apart. Bobbie don’t respect herself at all, she slept with two friends, and goes to sleep with the guy for the money to get her eyes done. Also for not respecting anyone in this play that’s what tear Ricky and Bobbie apart.

The second form of respect is the respect of property. This includes anything from writing on a desk at school to stealing from a department store. Property, whether it is the schools, a companys, a strangers, or a friends, should always be respected. Respect means taking that extra few seconds to drive the speed limit so as not to hit anyone or anything. It means not smashing a pumpkin at Halloween just for fun. It means not throwing that piece of trash on the ground. That is respect.

Lastly, one must respect his or herself. This respect is holding your head high and respecting your own opinions. It’s acknowledging that you have ideas and then sharing them because you are not afraid of what others may think. It is not letting peer pressure and other things affect the way you think or want to think. Respect for yourself is the most important of all because without it, you would have no respect for others.

Now that you know a brief, but clearer, explanation, of respect, practice it. Practice at school, at home, or at work. Say thank you, please, and youre welcome. Clear your dishes, dont beat up your little brother, and try not to block the hallway. Dont be afraid to share your thoughts and opinions. Respect other people, their property, and above all, respect yourself. Respecting yourself is the biggest gift to you. You know who you are, what you are and where you coming from. Bobbie had to do this just to get the money and become someone in her life that she is not. Also she is not the only girl doing this but still respect yourself no matter what.

From Local to Global

The problem is a familiar one to international brand marketers. The company may be strong and well positioned around the world, with some great brands. And to achieve growth there is an aggressive agenda to develop through acquisitions, expansion into new markets and constant innovation. But globalization brings unique problems. Should you develop regional or global centers of innovation and development, or remain essentially decentralized? Clearly business is transacted at a country level and local management know their market better than anyone, but expansion brings the need to manage regional or global brands and develop common practices across the organization.

Some companies have made a choice to remain decentralized in order to remain responsive to local market needs, but globalization is affecting everyone--and the emergence of regional and global retailers is placing a new emphasis on manufacturers to understand and manage their regional and global businesses.

For most companies, the problem is not lack of information--in fact, quite the opposite is generally true. In addition to internal sources providing financial and production data, there is a host of external sources providing information on markets, consumers and retailers.

Order Custom Essay on globalization

Unfortunately, they all tell different stories. The question is, which one gives the true picture? The frustrating response is usually that they all do, because they are intended to measure category and brand performance within a specific market, with specific brand positioning, its own set of competitors and its own language. So its not surprising that when companies do set up regional or global centers, the information they receive is difficult to handle. Its been developed to meet a different need.

Finding the Right Level

For a regional or global business center to be effective, it must be both innovative and creative--a focal point where company knowledge and ideas can be shared across the organization. In order to play this role it needs to gather local information and make the right connections between important local developments. At ACNielsen, we recognize that the regional or global information strategy should reflect the shape of the organization and the strategic priorities which drive company growth. These information strategies fall broadly into three groups the local model, the multi-local model and the global model.

The Local Model

In this version, the primary business focus is local markets. Management and budget control is essentially country-based with some limited coordination at the center. The information in this model is strongly country focused and reflects local market definitions and local competitors-- tactical information to deal with each local retail and consumer environment. Although extremely responsive to local market changes, this model makes it more difficult to optimize the brand portfolio and exchange knowledge across the organization.

The Multi-local Model

In many ways the multi-local is the most difficult model to develop because it demands a high level of information sharing and yet a local sense of autonomy. Here the regional centers seek to network informally with the countries in order to share knowledge and information. Because there are regional or global brands, some activities such as specific multi-country brand roll-outs are managed at a regional or global level. However, the management approach remains essentially decentralized. Information is structured in a similar way across countries, with the ability to view category segments, competitors and brands in a consistent way across borders. At the detailed level, however, information remains local-formulated for local retailer negotiations.

The Global Model

This model is characterized by one global center or a small number of regional centers responsible for all strategic marketing and product development--increasingly organized around categories. Market information is fully harmonized to ensure that category definitions, segmentation and products are aligned as far as possible across countries. In these organizations, the regional or global center innovates and takes the lead in the sharing of knowledge and best demonstrated practices for their business sector--made easier by the level of harmonization existing between local operations.

These models are not necessarily set at different points on an evolutionary scale, and in the past, companies frequently tested one model or the other as corporate philosophy changed. Now however, the trend is generally in one direction--and as globalization develops, certain factors are emerging which will challenge the traditional local information model. Perhaps the most significant of these is the emergence of the global retailer.

Retailers Beyond Traditional Borders

As a shopper it may be easy to overlook retailer expansion across borders. We might not associate a local supermarket chain in Bangkok or Mexico City with global retailing, but its increasingly likely that it will be owned by a multinational retailer. Groups such as Carrefour, Ahold and Wal-Mart already have thousands of stores operating across four continents, and they are continually seeking to maximize global scale by acquiring companies who match their geographical and operational blueprints.

In this environment of rapid global growth, retailers face a similar information challenge to manufacturers in understanding masses of different local data sets. However, as global retailer technology and harmonization techniques improve, a transparency will emerge, enabling retailers to compare supplier performance across countries. A good example can be found in Europe, where it is already acknowledged that the introduction of the euro will accelerate pricing transparency for both retailers and manufacturers.

No surprise perhaps, that some multi-national manufacturers have already established regional or global teams whose sole purpose is to manage a retailer customer across every aspect of the relationship. The traditional, country-centric relationship model is making way for the regional model and subsequently the global model, in which discussions will focus on regional or global sourcing--and where understanding cross-border business performance will be critical to successful negotiations.

Measuring Global Performance

How do the different information models measure up in this race toward Globalization? It may be easy to dismiss the Local Model as outdated, but its great strength is its agility to respond to local consumer needs. The threats to this model however, are an unwieldy brand portfolio and less chance to reduce spiralling costs by transferring knowledge and best practice. The local model is well placed to drive the local business, but is unlikely to provide the information harmony needed to face a global retailer.

There is no doubt that the Multi-Local and Global information models will have the advantage of decision-making based on a common core of information across countries. Perhaps the optimum model is one where the regional or global center can analyze a strong core of common information across all operating units. This equips them for cross-border retailer negotiations and deliver economies of scale, but has to be balanced by a recognition of local information needs to encourage enterprise and flexibility in country business units.

So what happens next? The advance of technology will ensure that there is no lack of information on either side of the negotiating table. But as the volume and detail of information expands, we can expect international manufacturers and retailers alike to seek common standards of information to be the basis of regional and global decision-making. Without this, there can be no shared understanding of the facts. As a brand owner, how do you review the regional performance of your brand if there is no agreement about how your category is defined or measured?

At ACNielsen we are committed to helping our retailer and manufacturer clients make sense of globalization by recommending a level of harmonization appropriate for their organization. There is no one size fits all strategy that can deliver the information needed to make global business decisions.

One thing is certain as globalization gathers pace and companies make new acquisitions and enter new markets and categories, the complexity of harmonizing information across borders can only increase. Although growth can sometimes be painful, there may never be a better time to think about a global information strategy.

Love is Overated

The 14th is just like any other ordinary day of the year to most people, until you add February to the front of it. But what is February 14th? Valentine’s day, of course! The day of all things red and heart-shaped, frilly white lace, and delectable chocolaty treats, not to mention those ever so popular conversation heart candies. It’s a day where people express to each other what they mean to one another, as well as come together to celebrate their relationship, which I would know nothing about.

You see I’ve been single on every Valentines Day for the past eighteen years of my life. I get no chocolate caramel filled candies, no tokens of my lovers’ appreciation , and lastly ,no cheesy Hallmark cards. On the 14th of February there is a sudden change in the environment that I can detect. I watch couples walking around hand in hand embracing each other, whispering sweet nothings into one each others ears. It frankly makes me want to vomit, on occasion, but on the other hand I wish I could be whisked away at that moment by the man of my dreams- just for that particular day. On no other day of the year do I feel such self-pity for , and I have no clue why. I suppose I’m wishing to be in the shoes of some lucky girl with her tall, dark, and handsome mate.

I guess I would consider myself a lucky girl up until about three unlucky days ago when one the most devastating ordeals in my life took place. And what was that? you might ask. Well it all started about five long months ago. While browsing through America Online profiles one lonely day, I came across ThePimp5400, His amusing screen name and profile prompted me to send out an instant message to him without delay. Within minutes of conversation with him, I realized we had many things in common, aside from sharing the same October 16th birthday. We were both attending college he was an aspiring doctor attending a private school up north and I was studying Physical Therapy here at the University of Michigan. Several weeks slowly passed by, and I continued talking to The Pimp, otherwise known as Mike. After about three weeks, we both suggested talking over the phone and even meeting eventually, since we were both from the Flint area. We decided on a date Borders for coffee and conversation, which turned out great. Well, to make a long story short, we ended up dating for about five bliss- filled months. Within that time period, we really opened up to each other. This was my first love, as well as boyfriend, and my first Valentine’s day not being alone and desperately single- or so I thought. At this point I believed that nothing could ever go wrong, but boy was I wrong.

Custom writing service can write essays on Love is overrated

After we dated for five months and had no monstrous arguments, it finally happened the big confrontation. After I deliberated, debated, argued, and cried for over two hours on the phone with Mike he finally hit me with that phrase all girls madly in love dread; Let’s just be friends or in other fateful words, I’m dumping you. He explained to me that he was just too busy to have a relationship at the moment and that school and work were more important to him than having a girlfriend.

Which I suppose some may agree and justify him. Just when I thought I’d actually have a boyfriend on Valentines Day for the first time in my life, I was cruelly disposed of at twenty eight days, four hours, and six minutes before the big day. I assume that being dumped is something that will eventually happen to everyone at some point his or her life though. Getting dumped isn’t the end of the world ,although it seemed like that for several days after the break up. The initial why me! and the over-eating half a gallon of Edy’s Double fudge brownie ice cream surpassed after a few days.

I guess I was just hoping for something that was never truly there. I was hoping for someone to share that special day with for once in my boyfriend-less eighteen years of life. Maybe someday I’ll find that extraordinary individual in the next few months or years and have the most exhilarating Valentines Day ever.

Or maybe it’s just that Valentines Day is not all about love or appreciation, but a holiday over-popularized and capitalized by Hallmark and Hershey. All in all, my goal is to have a special someone by next Valentines Day to share it with.........

When one thinks of the, roaring 0s many images come to mind. Such as model T cars, the stock market crash, jazz music, the prohibition of alcohol, and wild parties with wealthy people. All of these images are portrayed in the novel The Great Gatsby. The most influential image that is shown throughout the entire novel is the idea of the American Dream. There is lots of reflection on symbolism, and especially colored symbolism. In this novel symbolism is a very important factor, it shows the difference between the different characters and scenes in the novel. The color green influences the story a lot. Green shows many thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and choices that Gatsby has throughout the story. White, as well, plays an even more important role in the novel as it is used to represent some of the characters, it also relates to the drinking and the driving that occurred. The color green is more a symbol of the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby. This sort of symbolism reoccurs in different places throughout the novel, especially with Gatsby.

The American Dream was an important goal set for people living during the 10s. This dream consisted of self improvement, popularity, love, and most importantly wealth. This dream is different for each person. However, in The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main character, Jay Gatsby’s dream is revealed but not accomplished. By improving himself from rags to riches with the wealth he gains from his business, the popularity he gets from the various people at his frequent parties and the image that is created of him from the lies and rumors that are spread at those parties, he hopes to win the love of Daisy. The dream for Gatsby is for Daisy to leave Tom for him. Gatsby feels so passionately about this issue that his dream becomes a never-ending goal that eventually takes over his life.

Gatsby grew up as a struggling, hard-working, person from North Dakota, to a rich and living in a mansion with servants, Great Gatsby. He had tried so hard to improve himself ever since he was a little boy. He even had a schedule on how he wanted to better his life, day to day. Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. (Fitzgerald 18) This proves that he has always been trying to become a wealthy person. One might think that becoming wealthy and prosperous was his American dream. However it was just a lure to win the lady of his dream.

Gatsby felt an extreme need for social acceptance, and a sense of popularity. He felt a need to prove himself to his peers. His extravagant parties made him quite well known. Parties where strangers would come and go as they please without even meeting Gatsby. An example of his need for popularity is the replacement dress that Gatsby bought for Lucille after she tore it at one of his parties. These parties were just an attempt to gain acceptance and support of people. Instead these parties served as more of an infestation of rumors concerning Gatsby himself. Somebody told me that they thought he killed a man once...I don’t think it’s much that, it’s more like he was a German spy during the war....Well he once told me that he was an Oxford man. (Fitzgerald 48, 5) Because of the fact that there were few people that had actually met Gatsby, people circulated stories that they had heard about him. However, these rumors proved to be false. These rumors made Gatsby look tough, educated, and even more popular to society. These parties and rumors also served as ways that he would hopefully win the love of Daisy.

Order Custom Great Gatsby paper

Gatsby tried to gain the love and dream of being with Daisy Buchanan. She was a past love that he desperately wanted to relive, and he would do anything to be able to be reunited with her. Nick points out many times to Gatsby that the past cannot be relived, but Gatsby replies ignorantly, Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can! (Fitzgerald 116) This proves the confidence in reliving his relationship with Daisy. Gatsby lived in a life of luxury. For some people this was their dream. However, Gatsby didn’t care about his wealth. He only worked for his millions to pursue his true dream; winning back Daisy’s love.

Love played a very important role in Gatsby’s American Dream. However, it is sad that his attempt to capture this dream ends up being what kills him. Mr. Wilson, in the wrong impression that Gatsby killed his wife, shoots him one day when Gatsby is in his pool. This brings an abrupt end to the dream that Gatsby had of being with Daisy. His death also proves that the dream he held inside of himself most of his life was a failure. His dream of improving himself was not a failure because he did make his millions, and become well known, but the dream that would complete his life had ended. In the end Gatsby’s death symbolizes the truth about the American dream, it is based on hope and hope alone.

The color green symbolizes different choices the character, Gatsby, can make during his life. The green element in this novel is taken from the green light at the end of the dock near Daisys house. I watched the green light fade away as the boat drew farther from the dock (Fitzgerald, 6). The color itself represents calmness, as in everything is perfect. This warns Gatsby that he should not pursue his dream of getting Daisy back because his chance has passed and everything is as it should be. Green shows many thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and choices that Gatsby has throughout the story. The color green also is an urge to move ahead in life, to do better in life and to succeed. Gatsby changes his entire persona for what he thinks society deems appropriate. He is constantly trying to be a more successful figure in society. One of the most important color symbolism scenes is “the valley of ashes”. It is one of the strongest wasteland images of the 10’s. It symbolizes darkness and unhappiness, whereas if you compare it to one of Gatsbys parties there is a totally different aspect of the colors. Gatsby’s parties are made up of bright, rainbow colors. This is the biggest difference in color symbolism.

The other significant color in the novel is the color white. This color symbolizes one thing, a mask. For example, Daisy is always seen wearing white, which gives her and innocent appearance. It is as if she uses that as an excuse for when she does something ridiculous or childish, making it seem as if she does not know any better. When in reality, she knows exactly what she is doing but just does not care. The color white in reference to Daisy seems to show the reader how in her presence everything, especially to Jay Gatsby, seems much purer. She also uses this persona of purity and childlike-ness to escape accountability for her actions. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together (18).

Gatsby had the American dream almost in his pocket but because he tried too hard, he was unsuccessful in accomplishing those dreams. Dreams give hope and a sense of direction, making them strive to achieve their goals. America was built with dreams. People wanted to believe and hope for a better life. One can only hope that with hard work the American dream can be achieved.

FAME - LIVERPOOL EMPIRE THEATRE 14TH MARCH 00

PLOT The play is a musical set in downtown New York and is about a group of young drama school students who all lust after fame. It follows their individual quests for success and their personal lives.

SET very impressive, effective and purposeful

 Gauze = covered stage at start of production, film projected on it whilst live action rehearsals went on behind it both could be seen by audience; this helped set the scene of the drama school and created interest

Write your Production Notes : Fame research paper

 Fixed Set = the action was set inside the drama school inside a large hall. On either side of the stage there were walls constructed with doors in and balconies on top. At the back were two spiral staircases, which lead up to anther balcony. Materials used were naturalistic and certain doors could be heard slamming shut

 Limited Colour Palette = main colours were greys, browns which created authentic NY style as the materials used were naturalistic. It could easily be coloured with lights; sets the action geographically

 Symmetrical Form = to balance the stage picture; this makes the stage aesthetically pleasing

 Swing Doors = allows swift entrances and exits; kept up tempo mood of the production

 Levels = three balconies and two spiral staircases allowed multiple action; denser experience

 Pivoting Corner Unit = can reveal scenes set elsewhere, e.g. a music practice room; it allows more locations, props, etc.

 Large Space = centre and down stage; allows dancing and entertainment

 Trucks = large steps which could be sat or stood on, creates movable levels and fills space; variable groupings. E.g. when Jo Vegas was singing a song the trucks allowed him to be raised at points and also remain centre stage and wander around varying his height and position

 Flying = dropping in scenery (blackboard/mirrors) allows smooth transition between scenes, action flows smoothly

 Car = finale; builds excitement and participation

 Theatre = obvious set not built for theatre as not all audience could see back balcony drawback

LIGHTING extremely effective

 Before production began the word FAME was projected onto the gauze using a gobo

 Very up to date lighting effects used electronic lights/gobos; not restricted by theatre equipment

 All fades and cross fades technically smooth

 General washes on stage were pink, purple, blue, etc very vivid colours which complemented the set and costumes, completed the stage picture, all worked well together

 Follow spots used throughout production, however not always effective and detracted somewhat from the action

ɧ Not always accurate and so faces were not always well illuminated

ɧ Size was adjustable and alterations were poorly accomplished and distracting

ɧ Throughout the dance sections the follow spots were used to highlight the dancers faces which was slightly inappropriate as their bodies should have been the focus

COSTUMES naturalistic urban, typical dance/theatre school. They weren’t spectacular which matched perfectly the style of the set. Special graduation costumes used which were light blue gowns and hats

I. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRM

The firm D&B sh.p.k. was founded on 14 May 15. It is owned by two shareholders who have invested equal capital in it.

The major part of its activity is the production of garments, mainly men’s shirts, as well as the production of uniforms for hotel, restaurants, private school students and uniforms for the personnel of hospitals and operation theaters. It also works through orders by special clients such as Banks, Embassies and other various institutions. The firm has a total of 40 full time employees.

II. LOCATION

The company D&B is located in part of the facilities of the former food factory “Ali Kelmendi” in Tirana. Out of the total of 5700 m, 1600 m are used up by its sections and production equipment. The main factors in this location are

· Market location

This is a very important factor which places the product close to the customer. The location in such a place is very convenient and reasonable also in connection with the distribution of garments from the warehouse to the retail sale points.

The firm possesses two retail sale shops in Tirana, one of which is located in the “Myslym Shyri” street, as well as 14 retail sale shops in various cities around the country where it distributes its products.

· Labor offer and cost

The company employs a total of 40 workers. This number of workers is stable for the moment, but given that the firm plans to launch new products in the market in the future, it seeks to increase the labor force at its disposal. The hiring method will be that of choosing among applicants, selecting those who have the best technical-professional abilities and a high level of qualification.

· Wages

One of the other factors is the wages norm, which in this region is lower, compared to other countries.

· Site factors

Another problem related to the location is the site where the factory is to be constructed. The firm has resolved this problem since long ago and has also taken into consideration the various elements in the case of expansion it possesses 5700 m, of which 1600 m are currently utilized.

· Ownership of the building

From the beginning of its activity, this firm has bought the building where the entire production process is carried out. In this manner, it has eliminated from the very beginning some factors related to paying rent or even other dues.

· Location of the retail sale shops

As was mentioned in the beginning, this firm possesses two retail sale shops in Tirana and 14 others in various towns. Regarding the location of the shops in Tirana, the firm took into consideration the following factors

· Purchasing power in the location area

· Competition in the location area

· The uniqueness of the location of the firm and of the competing ones

· The policies of the firm’s activity

· The quality of the competition

III. STRATEGY OF BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS

The strategies pursued by the D&B firm at the business level are

- Product development.

This strategy includes the modification of existing products which can be marketed to the consumer through the existing distribution channels. The strategy of the product development is realized

· Adaptation of products to the market needs.

· Development of the product with new models and dimensions.

The strategic objectives at the business level are

· Improving the product quality until European standards are achieved.

· Increasing the market share by 10%.

· Increasing incomes by 10% for the next 5 years.

· Continuous adaptation to technological changes.

· Increasing the variety of products through the production of new ones.

In order to ensure the competing advantage, the product management has developed appropriate strategies and objectives in order to support and implement the business strategy. These objectives are

· The use of quality control systems.

· A small variety of products will allow the increase of the number of produced items.

IV. CAPACITY

Capacity is the basic indicator of the firm’s performance. It is the total quantity of a product that can be produced within a given time.

Based on the acquired information, the capacity of the machinery is about 7000 shirts per month. The firm produces an average of 4000 shirts per month. In this case, the strategy followed is that of the capacity leadership, that is the demand is met and the incomes are maximized.

Capacity usage degree = actual output/ projected capacity

Capacity usage degree =4000/7000 = 0.57 or 57%

That is, the capacity of the firm for mass production is utilized at 57%.

The planning of the capacity is a strategic function. Given that the firm has an excessive capacity, it has planned to use that in order to produce new products in the near future.

Although we have over-capacity, the firm delivers the same production quantity per month. As a result, the greatest part of the produced garments is distributed and a smaller part is kept in reserve in the warehouse. This reserve quantity is used to meet the demand for emergency orders. Such a thing is characterized by a high degree of the usage of processes and high productivity.

V. THE PRODUCTION AND PROCESS AND THE ARRANGEMENT OF UNITS

The supplies and the raw materials are taken in Italy and in Switzerland. The stuff moves from the raw materials warehouse to the cutting unit where the cutting is carried out according to the defined standards. Further on they are moved to the production lines, which have been placed in parallel and each of them contains 4 machines each. This is where the entire production process is carried out. The garments come out of these machines and then they move on to the starching and ironing unit. Finally, the product goes through two seam sewing machines and a final ironing is done. After this phase is completed, the product moves on to the control and packing unit. This is where the product quality is checked, the D&B firm labels are attached and the final product is packed. The product then moves to the garments warehouse. A small part of this product is kept in reserve, whereas the other part is distributed to the retail sale shops.

The two production lines are organized according to the product, whereas the product in general is organized according to the processes. The arrangement of the machines is also done according to the processes. As a result, a given space is given to every process and the products move from one process to the other. The arrangement is done in such a manner that similar operations are grouped in a certain part of the factory. The same is true about the labor force. In other words, the firm employs the strategy of positioning by process.

Following is the table of the arrangement and location of machines

The arrangement by process is used by the firm in order to serve different clients. The resources are of the general destination type and call for small capital usage. The use of equipment is high. Moving from one process to the other, there is also time loss. During the arrangement, the architect needs to take into consideration which units need to be placed close to each-other in order to have better organization of work. Following is the diagram of the priorities in the production line arrangement, Fig. 1( Please see annex 1)

The firm D&B, besides mass-production, also produces to fulfill orders of special clients. Its main customers are hotel “Rogner,” hotel “Diplomat,” embassies, various institutions, etc. The demands of these customers are quite high, in terms of the quality of products. Usually the orders are made when the need for products arises. In this case, part of the machines is used in order to make these products and the other part is used for the mass-production. The important thing is to determine the time of delivery of the various products. Usually the delivery time is acceptable to the customers. The products need to be delivered to the customers within the promised delivery schedule, otherwise they will be unhappy with the firm’s service.

I emphasize that the number of customers demanding products by order is always increasing. This shows the seriousness of the firm.

The firm pays special attention to the relationship with competitors. It has a number of competition priorities that make it rank higher. These priorities are

· The low cost that comes as a result of the high level of mechanization and mass-production.

· The fast delivery time realized through the distribution channels.

· The sustainable quality.

· The secure distribution.

· The fast distribution.

When the number of orders is large and the delivery time is short, the firm works with extended hours. The employees are paid overtime for work carried out after hours. The firms pays all duties to the state and pays the workers’ insurance, gives awards on holiday occasions, leave, sick leave, etc.

The above chart shows the production ratios for the various products.

The firm’s managers have to define a standard plan in order to forecast product and sales as well as the orders by different customers. They forecast the actual orders of the clients and the product for at least the following month. The function of the general production level and the other activities that serve for meeting the current sales levels are some of the firm’s main goals.

The demand is generally leveled. However, the climax of the demand is in the spring and fall periods. Following is the chart of amounts ordered for all the months of the year

J F M A M J J A S O N D

VI. NEW PRODUCTS

The firm D&B has already entered the phase for projecting new products. It has started the production of various models of shirts for women. Although the product is in the introduction and experimentation phase and the volume is small, it has been received well by customers. So far, there are no competitors that offer the same product. The number of clients is small and the firm needs to make changes in the product from time to time. In this case, the main performance factor is the quality of the product and flexibility.

In the future, it is thought that the range of products of this kind will expand and there is a plan to install a laundry for washing and ironing supplies of restaurants and hotels, which will enable a greater closeness with the clients.

Regarding technology, plans are to purchase a computerized sewing machine that would embroider the firm’s initials and meet the clients demands in this sector.

Grapes of Wrath Question #4

Among the many themes in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath is a perfect example of the aggressive economic practices of profit minded corporate and banking elites. In a move to hedge losses on a on their real estate investment they elect to foreclose the leases on the farmland that was all but obliterated by the dust storms.

Buy grapes of wrath - what does it all mean? term paper

During the time of the Great Depression in Oklahoma money could be made in only a handful of ways. Among these were the drilling of oil, cattle herding and farming. Of these, all involved some kind of land purchase and some subsequent percentage of return on the property was sent to the lending entity. The occupation presented in the Grapes of Wrath is that of the farming industry. Steinbeck uses the opening few chapters to describe the prevailing socio-economic conditions as opposed to isolating a specific character so as to show the reader how widespread this problem was.

We are then introduced to a character named Tom Joad who spent four years in jail for murdering a man in a fight. On his way home he gets a ride with a truck driver at a diner. At this point he is oblivious to the fact that his family farm has been foreclosed on. As they are driving a turtle crosses the path of the truck. This turtle in its slow methodical movements to me symbolizes the struggles of the working class trying to vie for a position of economic stability and when the truck hits the turtle and puts it on its back it is very much like the economic elites bullying those of the working class.

Tom learns the details about what happened to his family’s forty-acre farm from Jim Casy, Tom’s former preacher, and Maley Graves, a possibly insane elderly man. They try to figure out a plan of attack against the bankers but realize that there is nothing really that they can do. When analyzing the situation from the perspective of the farmer one becomes sympathetic to their cause. However, the bankers have very valid reasons for their decisions.

A banker’s job is to maximize profit so that he can have enough to loan out (for a cost) to those that want it. If one of his primary investments is not yielding a return because the land is not producing enough then he has no choice but to obtain something on his investment. A banker losing his financial base has more of an effect on a particular community than a great depletion in the economically sustaining industry of the region.

The question then that the book raised to me was which is more important to reestablishing stability in a volatile environment, ensuring that there is a stable economic base or to ensure that as many people as possible have an means of income even if they incur massive amounts of debt in the process. I think that the position of least risk is most economically healthy this is why I am not overly sympathetic to Steinbeck’s attempt to demonize the bankers who were just out to protect their interests as well as the economic stability of the region.

Mahatma Ghandi once said, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Indeed, an act of vengeance does not resolve a conflict. This idea is seen throughout William Shakespeares sonnet 10. The sonnet is about a conflict between the speaker and the audience and how it is resolved. In the piece, the speaker out of an act of vengeance causes another (the audience) to feel pain because the audience once hurt him. Throughout the sonnet, however, the speaker realizes that his act of vengeance only causes himself to suffer after realizing that the pain he caused is much like the original pain he felt when the audience hurt him beforehand. In the end, the speaker concludes that they are both even now because both of their actions paid for the actions of the other and cancelled each other out. The theme that permeates throughout the sonnet is that any act of spite does not resolve conflict in a relationship because the fact that the speaker does something in revenge out of spite against the audience for his actions does not solve the conflict. It only makes the speaker sorry for what he did and in the end, the conflict is not actually solved; the speaker and the audience are just even. Throughout the sonnet, the uses of literary devices serve to elucidate and carry the theme. In sonnet 10, Shakespeare specifically uses his choice of language and allusion to the Bible in order to exemplify the theme. This sonnet is really awesome. I creates a sense of beauty and complextion that is rarely seen in modern poetry.

The word ‘leisure’, to most people, is believed to mean “free time”. In a society run by the second hand of the clock one can see that time is not “free”, and this statement is thus filled with deficiencies. Furthermore, the idea that “time is money”, in today’s capitalist society, puts a strain on seeing leisure as such. Philosophers, such as Csiksentmihalyi and Kubey who are later quoted in this text, have invited a way for humans to flourish and find excellence in all of our daily activities by introducing the Flow Theory.

The idea behind this paper is to give you, the reader, a clear understanding of ‘flow’; being the state of, the theory behind it, and the concept. I will first enlighten the reader with such, and follow with a description of a situation that I myself have been in that was lacking in ‘flow’. I will furthermore give a description of how I could have “framed” the situation in order to have been able to experience ‘flow’. I will conclude with a description of the same situation from the point of view of Virtue Theory (which I will later elaborate on), identifying the virtues that could have been used, and those that were.

To understand the theory of ‘flow’, one must first have a clear understanding of the state of ‘flow’, which can be described as

-the concentration of attention on a limited stimulus field

Order Custom Essay on The Flow Theory

-forgetting of ones personal problems

-a loss of the sense of time and of ones self

-the feeling of competency

-the feeling of being in control

-having a sense of harmony and union with ones surroundings

-a balance of ones “inner” and “outer” skills being used

At the most general level, it can be said that ‘flow’ is a state of experience

that is autotelic or intrinsically rewarding; hence, it provides its own

motivation. [Csiksentmihalyi P5]

At its most simplistic level, ‘flow’ is the balanced state between boredom and anxiety. In achieving this balance, one can find pure enjoyment, which leads to the theory of ‘flow’.

From the Buddhist perspective, one works to utilize skills and cultivate many forms of excellence.

….[W]hat human beings need, in order to flourish, is to challenge their skills and experience the satisfaction of sharply focused attention on interesting fields of endeavor. [Mason P]

From this, one can derive an autotelic function-something that provides an experience that is intrinsically rewarding.

The theory behind ‘flow’ is human flourishing and human excellence. It is the idea that one can improve the quality of ones life by the way in which we invest our attention, be it at a job, at school, a sport, ect. The idea is that one can find a balance between boredom and anxiety in any aspect/activity of life by sharpening their skills and/or shaping the environment to experience a state of mind (‘flow’) which is very satisfying and enjoying. It is a way to augment the quality of our lives, and show that we can flourish (have pure enjoyment) in any activity.

The concept of flow makes it possible to see work, and culture definitions of life style in general, as much more flexible than they usually are thought to be. It allows us to question the necessity of drudgery and anxiety, and it suggests ways in which everyday life can be made more free. [Csikszentmihalyi P4]

A situation that I have been many times in the past that was not conducive to ‘flow’ was when I was doing the household chore of cleaning. I am not what one would call a “neat freak”, in fact I am known to be quite the opposite.

I was living at my mother’s house in Ottawa. I had promised my mother that I would have my bedroom clean by Wednesday evening. A real estate agent was coming over Thursday evening to appraise our house. It was Wednesday evening, and I was just getting home from work. I was starving, and my plans were to eat a quick dinner and then head out to meet some friends. As soon as I opened the front door, I heard my mother calling to me, saying that my room was waiting for me. Frustrated, I stormed up to my bedroom to begin the torture.

This was a torture that I seemed to be enduring on a monthly basis (if I could get away with it for that long). While I engaged myself in the activity of cleaning, I would definitely say that I was in a state far from ‘flow’ for many reasons;

-I spent more time staring at the clock than the contents of my room

-I was doing this task to please my mother

-I wanted to do the quickest job possible in order to eat and meet my friends on time

-I spent more time thinking of how to get even with my mother than I spent organizing my stuff

-my concentration of attention was on my plans for that evening, not on the activity itself

-I was very aware of my personal problems (such as having to clean up) and was feeling quite sorry for myself

-I was very aware of the time I believed was being wasted

-I had a feeling of total incompetency as the contents of my bulging closet fell to the floor as I tried to stuff in one last article of clothing

-I felt as though it were my mother who was in control, not myself

-I was not using any skills relevant to cleaning (and therefore had no balance)

-I was furious with my surroundings

-once I had finished (or at least I believed the job was done) I felt no satisfaction

This example, simplistic as it may seem, seeks to prove that any situation can become a ‘flow’ situation.

In order to have experienced ‘flow’ while cleaning, I would have had to frame the situation in other ways;

-seeing the task as meaningful in itself

-knowing that I could do this and thus feeling competent about it

-sharpening my cleaning skills

-using what little skills I already had to find a balance

-limiting my stimulus field to what I was doing at the time and concentrating my attention on it

-doing the task more regularly in order to have a sense of being in control

-realizing that there is reward in having a clean room for itself

-seeing it as a start to order in my life in the more general meaning

-expanding the limit to my attention

…attention is required to bring order to experience…[Kubey&Csiksent]

We can look at this situation from the point of view of Virtue Theory as well. Virtue theory, like ‘flow’ theory is a theory about human motivation. The idea behind this theory is that;

…human beings are not only motivated to seek pleasure and enjoyment and avoid pain and discomfort, they are also capable of acting for the sake of other values, and are often willing to give up pleasure and enjoyment, and accept discomfort and even pain, for the sake of these values. [Furthermore], people should organize their lives so that these other values play a prominent role in shaping the kind of persons they become. Life, on this view, is about becoming a better person through the acquisition of virtue and wisdom. As we grow older, we can gain insight and benefit others from having developed as persons, or we can simply become less and less powerful and increasingly small-minded. [Mason P1]

A virtue is an aquired character trait. A trait must be something that makes someone a better person, it is…

…[what] someone needs in order to flourish, or to live well as a human being. A virtue is an axcellence. But not just a passing one that you display for a while. It is a deep trait of a person…something you might…cite when you wish to honour that person… [Mason P6.]

A virtue consists only of a trait which is praiseworthy, the opposite, a vice.

The definition of Virtue theory can be viewed as such;

-an AQUIRED

-EXCELLENCE (trait,quality)

-for which we are RESPONSIBLE

-aquired by TRAINING and HABBIT

-is subject to PRAISE and BLAME

-has a corresponding VICE

-is part of ones identity as a person

From the point of view of Virtue theory;

-life is better if you cultivate higher desires

-not all desires are worthy

-pursuing something that is genuinly worthwhile

-worth sacrificing enjoyment for

-what human potentiality is all about

-aspiring to certain ideals in ones life

-fullness of life

-development as a person

-meaningful existence

When using (or applying) a virtue (valuable quality), you get intrinsic value regardless of enjoyment. Furthermore, essential to a virtue is understanding the good in it.

Aristotle viewed virtue as the mean between two extremes- they are excellences of character that promote human flourishing, whereas vices are weaknesses that impede flourishing.

We are not made good or bad by nature. [Aristotle]

From the description of my experience with cleaning, one can safely say that I exercised no virtues. However, certain vices were exercised;

-dedication-to my later plans that evening not to be late

-honesty-I told my mother just how unfair I felt the situation was

Certain virtues that I should have exercised;

-respect-for my mother

-dedication-to my room

-patience-to do a good job

-sense of order/beauty-for my room

-creativity-for a messy yet clean room

-perseverance-to see the task through regardless of other plans

-temperance

Years later, I have been in ‘flow’ while doing household chores. I have, as well, definitely applied many of the above mentioned virtues as well. With the understanding of these theories, I can already see that I have been and continue to be gaining a higher quality of life.

Regardless of the activity, (or even age, as my experience was plucked from years ago), one can see that ‘flow’ theory (with its own deficiencies) and Virtue theory alike, strive towards human excellence and human flourishing. With these theories alive in our minds on a daily basis, we can all improve the quality of our lives at work, rest and play.

The term socialization refers to the “lifelong social experience by which individuals develop their human potential and learn culture.” [Macionis et al. p 55] The concept of socialization is that our actions are driven/learned by culture. Socialization is also the foundation of personality, which we build by internalizing our surroundings. Through the lifelong process of socialization, society transmits culture from one generation to the next.

A good example of socialization is the learning of gender roles. Anthropologist Margaret Mead reasoned that if gender reflects biological facts of sex, that people everywhere in the world would define the same traits as masculine or feminine. However, she argued, that if gender is cultural, such conceptions should vary. Mead researched three societies in New Guinea and concluded that “culture is the key to how sexes differ.” [Macionis et al. p]

In the first society, Arapesh, Mead reported that the men and women had similar behaviour and attitudes. They possessed similar traits that our culture would define as feminine, such as being cooperative and sensitive to others. Similarly, Mead found the men and women of Mundugumor to posses similar traits as well, although contrary to those of the former. Men and women of the latter possessed traits defined by our culture as masculine, such as selfishness and aggressiveness (stemming from a culture of headhunting and cannibalism). The third society, that of Tchambuli, Mead observed to be similar in culture to our own in the facts that gender roles were distinct. Although, contrary to our culture, the feminine and masculine traits defined by their culture were reversed.

A global study, performed by George Murdoch, showed that there seemed to be an agreement between the division of tasks seen as masculine, and those seen as feminine. Globally, physical labour seemed to be defined as ‘men’s work’, whereas the responsibilities of the home, such as cooking, cleaning and child rearing were deemed the ‘ladies work’. In a global perspective, including all cultures, only certain tasks were defined as strictly masculine or feminine by all societies. From such research, we can see that “…gender is simply too variable across cultures to be considered a simple expression of biology. Instead … what it means to be male and female is mostly a creation of society.” [Macionis et al. p]

Order custom research paper on Gender Roles

Socialization is a lifelong process beginning at birth, as is the learning of gender roles. “Just as gender affects how we think of ourselves, so it teaches us to act in normative ways.” [Macionis et al. p6] The learning of gender roles begins in the family and is carried out in peer groups and educational institutions as well as in the media.

Sociologist Jessie Bernard stated that very soon after birth, family members push infants into what she labels as the “pink world” of the girls, and the “blue world” of the boys. Parents, she stated, do this unconsciously by the way in which they act themselves, and by the way in which they handle their child.

A study was done with many women who were given a baby dressed as either a boy or as a girl. It was noted that the women handled the child dresses as a girl in an affectionate manner, holding them tenderly and giving them ample amounts of hugs and kisses. However, the women handled the child dressed as a boy more aggressively, such as bouncing them and swinging them in the air. This study concluding “…the female world revolves around passivity and emotion, while the male world places a premium on independence and action.” [Macionis et al. p6]

Similarly, in the female peer group, the basis for family life is promoted through the activities they participate in, such as skills of communication and cooperation. While male peer groups activities promote masculine traits such as aggression and control and competitiveness. Although we are experiencing change, the educational institutions traditionally encouraged gender specific patterns. Pushing males towards natural sciences and females towards home studies and clerical work. The media has a large role in the learning of gender distinction. It was not until recently that television has portrayed women in prominent roles. And even today commercials for home products, such as dish soap and cleaners portray women doing the housework, whereas commercials for beer, cars and financial areas are predominantly male.

Carol Gilligan argued that “…moral development of men and women is quite different. While men tend to focus on human rights, justice, and freedom, the principles of human responsibility, caring and commitment form the basis of women’s sense of morality. Feminists now refer to all aspects of society differentiating between masculine and feminine, such as toys for boys and girls, a segregated labour force, and advertisements that accentuate cultural ideas of masculinity and femininity, as elements of a gendered society.[Baker and Driden p1]

In conclusion, we see that gender roles, as specific as they are in our culture, vary from culture to culture. And the variation of gender roles, in a global perspective, demonstrates that they are learned through socialization as oppose to stemming from nature, instinct and drive.

Contrasting Narrative Essay

William Bradford and William Byrd were two English colonials whose narratives had many differences. There was a substantial difference in the events, themes, writing styles, tones, etc, between these two narratives. The author’s backgrounds were related, but their thoughts and beliefs on certain issues, such as religion and techniques used on settling in the new world. Bradford and Byrd had clashing issues dealing with the Indians, as well as their basic purpose for journeying to the new world. The narratives of William Bradford and William Byrd had many contrasting issues and beliefs on settling in the new world.

Starting with the background of the narratives, Bradford’s narrative deals with the Puritan religious rebellion from England, while Byrd’s deals with the English colonization of the new world. The author’s styles of writing of writing are different, because Bradford uses a plain style and Byrd uses a satirical style. “These wretches were set ashore, some fatal disagreement or laziness, and were either starved or killed by Indians.” This quote describes the criticizing and ridicule style of Byrd, while Bradford uses more of a narrative type style where he is outside of the story with no bias expressed or used. Byrd uses a third person omniscient point of view, because he knows the thoughts of every character. Bradford uses a third person limited point of view, while knowing on the thoughts of one character in the narrative.

Bradford’s characters were English men, rebelling from the English church and attempting to start a new life in the new world. Byrd’s characters were loyal to the English church and they went to the new world for financial success. Byrd’s settlers settled in the south successfully due

to good climate and fertile farmland, while becoming wealthy aristocrats, settling on enormous plantations. Bradford settlers were almost a complete opposite, because they landed and lived in a rough agricultural area, with cold weather and rough land. “In two months, half the company died. Struggling to get shelter and comfort, and being infected with scurvy and other diseases.” The settlers panicked and almost abandoned everything except crying to god and begging for his good will, instead of fighting to meet the necessities to survive. They had difficulty adapting to their new surroundings, because they had never seen a frontier before. The blamed it evil, instead of making good relations with the Indians and fighting to survive, like Byrd’s Englishmen did.

Both Byrd’s and Bradford’s narratives had clashing issues on events both encountered in their respective journeys. Bradford’s characters did not want to have any relations at all with the Indians, because they were scared of them and felt they were evil to not be the same as a Puritan. “England intended to convert these gentiles, they embraced their prudent alliance.” This quote summarizes Byrd’s settlers belief on making an alliance with the Indians. They felt that the Indians could become a significant resource for their survival, because they had new ideas on how to make food and deal with the terrain. Byrd’s colonist used their knowledge and resources to have a successful colonization of the new world. They learned how to new crops, establish government and created a unity among the people. Bradford’s characters fell apart due to a shell shocking experience of arriving in the new world. They did not work together and lost all hope of surviving. They began to die due to starvation and deadly diseases, while not being able to adapt from their religion to survive new surroundings and demands.

Overall, Byrd’s characters learned to survive by adapting to their new lifestyle, and being able to develop a bond with the Indians. Byrd used a more aggressive and expressive style, rather than the plain, dull style of Bradford. Bradford’s settlers were journeying to the new world, because of a religious rebellion attempting to start a fresh new life. Byrd’s settlers made a better-prepared journey, expecting a radical change in their life, while attempting to succeed financially in the new world. The narratives of William Bradford and William Byrd had many contrasting issues and beliefs on settling in the new world.

“The Loss of the Creature,” by Walker Percy examines how society “preformulates” a way for individuals to experience specific events and how, through this “preformulation,” the individual is no longer an individual but a consumer who consumes these ideas by the experts of these events. Thereby, the individual gives up his/her right to sovereignty of his/her own life experiences. One passage in Percy’s essay that gave me the opportunity to see something I had not see before is in his representation of the misguided tourists as the “overanxious mother.”

“Are they like Fabre, who gazed at the world about him with wonder, letting it be what it is; or are they not like the overanxious mother who sees her child as one performing, now doing badly, now doing well?” In this passage, Percy refers to a couple who on their journey stumble upon an Indian village. Do these tourists take this experience and make the best of what it is by discovering its unique beauty by themselves; or has the way in which they have been presented with a truly unique experience affected their overall experience? In this selection , Percy defines the difference between the individual and the consumer (those who consume what is laid out before them by the seller or expert). The tourists are presented by Percy, not as those who “gaze at the world . . . letting it be what it is” but as the “overanxious mother” who worries that their child, the village, my fail them in not bringing to the tourist a unique experience, which is only certified a “true experience” by the expert ethnologist.

This passage reminds me of myself and how I at certain times am similar to the “overanxious mother” who fears that at any moment my “child,” my father, will fail me. I have an image in my head of an “ideal father.” I gain this image of the “ ideal father” through standards set forth in television shows, movies, and books. When my father does not do what the “experts” explain a father should do for his daughter, for instance show some sort of affection towards his daughter, I become disappointed and sad. However, when my father shows affection towards me I am overjoyed. My expectations are at some instances met and at other instances unmet and therefore, like the misguided tourists, I become the “overanxious mother,” worried that I will never have the ideal father-daughter relationship with my father.
