The movie, Natural Born Killers, directed by Oliver Stone, written by Quentin Tarantino, viewed by scores of prominent citizens and common moviegoers, raises many controversial and moral issues (1). NBK presents us with what’s supposed to be a social satire on the public’s fascination with the violence in the media, in a raw form. People rant that NBK holds solid performances, and has great experimental film technique. However on the critical side it contains, extreme carnage, sex, drugs, and language. The movie is frightening and delivers a strong message about the violence we obsess over but is the message too strong? Oliver Stone strongly defends his movie and he stands proudly behind it has a satire, to protect him from any lawsuits that might come his way. His movie is supposed to be a satire about society’s obsession with violence in the media but seems more along the lines of a ferocious array of madness and carnage. His movie promotes violent lawlessness instead of revealing the follies of society.

Stone’s beloved controversial movie, NBK, definitely gives a sense of violence but doesn’t present itself as a satire. Obviously this movie is an overkill of manslaughter, sexual innuendos, and violent crimes. It is so much so that you really can’t distinguish if it even is a satire. Stone undeniably claims NBK is a satire but its suffers from the worst failings, an unbelievably heavy-handed tone, cartoons and camera tricks that don’t contribute to the message, mind-numbing repetitiveness, annoying performances by the leads, and the evident fact that Oliver Stone attempted to make a satire, while he himself lacks the one irreducibly necessary element of satire subtlety (). The gruesome movie numbs your senses to violence, leaving you confused, feeling disoriented, giving you a sense of disturbance, and not knowing weather to like the movie or hate it (). The movie also lacks another traditional characteristic of a satire; universally satires are made to be funny as John Grisham writes, “A satire is supposed to make fun of whatever it is attacking. But there is no humor in Natural Born Killers” (Kirszner, Laurie, and Mandell, Stephen. “Unnatural Killers.” Patterns for College Writing.) NBK glamorizing killing, his point of satire is so blurred by the orgy of violence you never know if it was supposed to be a satire. Some people might not even know what a satire is, how are they supposed to realize this movie is a satire. If this is what Stone calls a satire, it’s clearly too much satire; you can’t correct a folly if it is unclear. Not only is the satirical objective of this movie unclear, it doesn’t present us with any formidable objective or morals to believe in.

I believe that our society today instructs us in a particular sense, or non-sense, of bad behavior and that our lives quite naturally reflect this instruction. As in the case of Ben Darras and Sarah Edmondson they were influenced by the movie, so much so that they were driven to kill two innocent people in almost the exact ways as Mickey and Mallory did in NBK. Sarah told police that “it was as if he was fantasizing from the movie ‘Natural Born Killers’” (Brown, Corie. “Can Pistols Get Smarter?” Newsweek August 1 4). As they were driving along a deserted rural highway, Ben guns down an innocent hardworking citizen, just for the sheer amusement. During the get-away, the callous boy mimics the noise of the dying man. The following day Ben demands Sarah to kill someone, that it’s her turn. That following night, she obeyed his orders by shooting a convenience-store clerk coldheartedly, leaving the mother of three paralyzed below the neck. Stone boldly claims that Ben and Sarah were under the influence of drugs and that they also watched Fantasia the night before they departed. Well, Stone it wasn’t Fantasia they were mimicking and the drugs sure didn’t kill anybody. Sarah professes she saw a demon on the clerk’s face not Mickey Mouse. John Grisham writes, “Oliver stone is saying that murder is cool and fun, murder is a high, a rush, murder is a drug to be used at will. The more you kill, the cooler you are. You can get by with it, you won’t be punished” (Kirszner, Laurie, and Mandell, Stephen. “Unnatural Killers.” Patterns for College Writing.) Oliver stone, as well as the media, is glamorizing killing and teenagers have become disillusioned in this false reality sometimes inflicting serious crime.

The exciting life, depicted in movies, portrayed in video games, scene on T.V, supported in NBK, utterly lacks ethical qualities and moral commitments (4). In addition to all the chaos in NBK, Mickey and Mallory destroy others, as well as themselves, and there is no heroic intervention. To some the movie itself is a kind of weak blessing, it reveals to the educated how sick our society is but to the uneducated endorses murder and bloodshed. Just as many television series and commercial films eulogize an affluent cast of characters, who never mention where their money is coming from, so the stories of this generation of teenagers distinguish little consciousness of a link between labor and income (5). Characters like the ones in NBK don’t even mention success in education, good parenthood or ambitions in the workplace. NBK doesn’t contain values that enrich society; morals are all together absent in the movie. The industry seems to be running away from the fact, as Corie Brown wrote, “The studio executives hate publicity about their moral values”(Brown, Corie. “Can Pistols Get Smarter?” Newsweek August 1 4). Yet our crime rate is the highest ever and our simple concern isn’t being dealt with. Mickey and Mallory are criminals to the most sadistic degree; they commit crimes, but only for the hell of it, they hate; not understanding why they hate, they are loved or abused or depressed and don’t know why. In short, they consistently miss the way into the heart, the motive behind events, the feelings behind purposes. Movies like NBK are worsening our societies morals not improving them.

As the weight of the violence in movies has become too great NBK doesn’t seem able to sustain it. NBK persuades actions occurring today in society, drug deals are made, young women compete with other young women for the favors of men, children get abused, cars crash, people are killed, girls get raped and as the bumper sticker says, “shit happens (6).” These abysmal qualities are all supported in films like NBK, plots snap or explode leaving us with no morals or hope, feeling even guiltier about life. Clearly Oliver Stone can’t figure out how to solve the problems he invented in the movie. His approach of a satire falls short, a Newsweek article reported, “What Stone can’t acknowledge in his fitfully astonishing, ultimately numbing movie is that he and Wayne Gale are two sides of the same coin. It’s fighting fire with fire the movie cancels itself out. You leave it more battered than enlightened”(Ansen, David. “Raw Carnage or Revelation?” Newsweek). Oliver Stone should be accountable for the copycat crimes to some degree. Even though, Ben and Sarah were under the influence of drugs. Stone shouldn’t be thrown in jail or sued for copycat crimes. He shouldn’t hind behind his narcissism; he should make an effort to repair what his violent movie depicts. He should make a movie with heroic interventions, and moral qualities. We can only successfully build the future with such intangibles as hope, faith, love commitment, trust and hard work.

Sudden Oak Death

This paper is to inform the public about the ever-spreading disease that has been found in coastal areas of California and other Pacific coastal states. Its effects on the oak trees of the area have played a big part in people’s lives in more ways than one. Social, political, and economic impacts of this disease have hit home causing extreme concern into preventing the spread of this Sudden Oak Death. My strong opinion will be represented throughout this paper in order to inform students in this class and the public in general, about the huge impact this disease has caused and will continue to cause in the future. As an avid believer in preserving our natural resources, this topic is a good one for me to research and present to you.

Large numbers of tanoaks, coast live oaks, and black oaks have been dying in Californias coastal counties since 15. This epidemic has since been known as Sudden Oak Death. Since 15, it has been confirmed in twelve central coastal counties in California. In determining the cause of this disease, researchers have identified a species of Phytophthora, which is a fungus-like organism, from dying trees. In later research, they have found that this Phytophthora ramorum may be spread though rainwater, infected wood and also soil. This would be possible because rainwater may carry this disease to other trees though groundwater, flooding, rivers/streams and also maybe transported by the wind carrying soil though the air and displacing the diseased soil near oaks in other areas. (http//cemarin.ucdavis.edu/history.html)

One of the major Oaks affected is the famous redwood. This California icon is a valuable resource as timber and may be vulnerable to the disease. It has also been killing the red oaks that are used by the hardwood and timber industry in making furniture, cabinets and other wood products. This is an example of how this disease has impacted us socially. When homeowners watch their precious oaks die by the thousands, they become appalled. These infected trees are home to many animals and birds as forms of habitat and food. Large amounts of diseased trees can also affect our carbon dioxide amounts due to the lack of photosynthesis. The leaves turn yellow and they begin to round off and become spiky. They also form rust spots on the leaves and an ooze seeps out from the trunk. Once these conditions happen, it’s too late to save the tree. Gaining currency about whether or not this disease will spread into the interior of the United States is a sign of a political impact that has been debated by plant pathologist. This was until the disease popped up in the maple trees in the Sierra Nevada foothills nearly 100 miles away. This produced evidence that this aggressive pathogen is highly capable of adapting to different trees and environments. If this disease can spread so easily, what will happen in years down the road when its effects have spread all over the country or even the world? Will we have enough wood resources to supply our demand which is ever growing? These are just a couple questions that we must ask when determining how we should attack this problem.

Even though the federal government spends over $85 million to do research on this Sudden Oak Death, the scientist have yet to determine exactly how this disease originated, how it spreads, or how to get rid of it. They do know that in just a matter of a few months, the Phytophthora ramorum spores penetrate the bark in the trunk, and eat the cambium, which is a layer or tissue that supplies the trees with food and nutrients. “The scientists are studying whether pollution or short-term climate changes might have sparked the disease. Theyre looking at how the disease fits into the forest dynamic, whether animals and other plants play a role. Because oaks are popular trees in residential areas, humans may be a factor, through pruning and other tree-management techniques.” (http//www.usatoday.com/news/science/biology/00-04-0-oak-disease.htm)

When looking at what we can do about this disease, the government thinks it might have slowed the spreading of the Sudden Oak Death by regulating its movement of host plants from nurseries. This has shown to be a good way of reducing the contamination of other trees by reducing their contact with infected ones. An economic issue concerning the disease is one brought to the attention of the U.S. Energy Department. They were asked by scientists to fund the gene mapping of the pathogen. But when looking for a cure to the disease, no real answer has come about. In labs, scientists have studies organic chemicals and compounds that might prevent the Phytophthora spores from infecting the tree. Different trunk coatings have also been tested by scientists in order to prevent the infection. Despite all these tests and methods of curing the disease, no real solution has led the scientist to finding an answer for the Phytophthora. As of right now, the only solution the scientists have come up with is to just remove the host plant from the forest which could cause severe ecological damage to the ecosystem.

In conclusion, I would like to stress the importance of testing and finding a solution to this problem. If this spreading of the Sudden Oak Death keeps spreading and ultimately reaches the interior of the states, it could cause even more severe social, economical, political, and ethical problems than we have now. The need for more testing is something that we must embrace and seriously look at in order to preserve our wonderful resources. We must look down the road towards our future generations and realize that our decisions now will impact the lives and resources of our kids. In order to save our wonderful trees, we must support further research for the curing of this disease.

Each day a person goes through many choices and actions that decide which way his life turns. Such choices can be as simple as what food will be consumed today, or they may be more complex. These choices do not exclude ones made in reference to sexuality and gender. However free willed humans believe ourselves to be, these choices are already defined for us by the culture we live in. Constructs of sexuality and gender are unconsciously learned from society, which can be seen by comparing how separate cultures define gender and looking at “normal” sexual behavior in the confines of each culture. What may be natural to one may be considered bizarre or even immoral to another. These constructs differ from one culture to another, but there seems to be an underlining similarity that can be learned from studying them all. To different degrees, one gender is always considered superior and thus, dominates. That gender, therefore, classifies the nature and norms for sexual activity. In talking about spheres of exchange, we are essentially dealing with the question of whether classical economic theory and the market principle hold true in the economies of all societies. In other words, can we assume that the universal motivation behind all exchange is the rational maximization of profit?

Anthropologists have explored this ethnographically under the aegis of economic anthropology, which broadly seeks to compare and analyse the study of production, consumption and exchange in non-Western societies. Their aim has been twofold to locate economic activities in the wider social and cultural setting within which they occur, and to comprehend the local rationality built into these unconventional and seemingly irrational systems of exchange.

Ethnographic accounts of this nature have been successful in demonstrating the coexistence of modes of exchange in economies that are not exclusively characterized by a single mode of reciprocity. It is in this respect that the idea of spheres of exchange gains significance. What this means is that different categories of goods stand differentially in a moral hierarchy and are attributed different values. Exchange of goods herein is determined by a lot more than simply an exchange value. Instead you have a series of barriers to the interchange of things and even on their convertibility or lack thereof from one sphere to another. Thus the usual stipulations of a market as we know it, do not apply here. Instead we see the movement of different proportions of similar goods against each other within the context of ordinary transactions, gift giving, mutual aid and the internal economy of kinship relations.

“Account for the inability of the U.S. to contain and defeat communist forces up to 175”

“I used to tell my soldiers, “the minute that you harm an innocent person, you put the whole family in the hands of the Communists” General Lu Mong Lan

The problem with the United States involvement in the first and primarily the second Vietnam Wars was that the nation never made any decisive military commitment that in any way matched the total commitment of the Vietnamese Viet Minh and the Viet Cong in the North and South. The belief of the Communists in the need for the unification of the nation was such that they fought against the French, Japanese and the Americans over a total period of over 0 years. “I was ten years old when a Viet Minh convinced me to go to a secret school. And they convinced me to introduce them to three of my friends “One becomes three, three becomes nine, and this way we will have many people” . The total commitment to eventual liberation is evident here in the extremely young age of “education” and involvement in the war effort, against, in this case, the United States.

In America, the government had no real grounds to convince the American people that military involvement was definitively necessary in the situation. The whole American involvement was from the outset based on Truman’s paranoid (or credible, as history may show) “Domino Theory”, that foresaw one nation after another falling to Communism under the influence of China and Russia.

Write my Essay on Vietnam and Americas inability to contain Vietnamese forces cheap

Once the war really started to get serious, with major casualties and above all, the transmission of footage into the living rooms of Americans houses all over the country, the whole American involvement created more and more tension across the country as time went on.

The war violated the Geneva Peace Accords, and this is a major reason why America could never fully commit itself to an all out war, explaining the absurd title of “military adviser” that American (combat) troops carried up until around 165 (according to the video “Vietnam The War That Divided America”). The lack of a “Declaration of War” from President Lyndon B. Johnson was significant “It was believed that Johnson did not seek a declaration because neither the cause nor the aims were clear enough in terms of national defence” .

Americas’ failure to control the images that went back to the “home front” meant that moral of the general public and opinion towards the war, was, by the start of the new decade (170) such that President Richard Nixon had to launch the re-escalation of bombing of North Vietnam, Cambodia (“Operation Menu”) and Laos in secrecy. When Nixon did announce it publicly, the result was (among other major protests) the Kent State and Jackson State University shootings.

All of the above mentioned problems with U.S. home front motivation and fighting moral contributed to the actual problem that the U.S. and her allies faced in trying to fight a war against a highly skilled and highly nationalistically motivated force, fighting in their territory, using tactics ideally suited to the terrain. The Guerrilla tactics employed by the Viet Minh and Viet Cong through the war worked as well as any specialist tactics have ever worked in history “in Vietnam the war’s nature and strategy produced a schizophrenic norm…”You could be walking and it was quiet and peaceful, and you are listening to the birds singing, and the air smells good, and the trees and the greenery look beautiful. And then all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose. From a rocket or a mortar. And a few seconds later it is quiet again.”

All attempts at “containment” by the U.S. were failed from the start because of the ease at which Viet Cong gorillas in the South could be both hidden and resupplied by sympathetic villagers, who either supported through their own hate of America, or through the terror tactics of the Viet Cong. On top of this, Viet Cong could also be resupplied, rearmed and remanned by the Viet Minh in North Vietnam, compliments of the Ho Chi Minh Trail through Laos and Cambodia.

The impossibility of controlling the movements of the Vietnamese was exemplified in the “carpet bombing” of huge areas of dense rainforest in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia; “15500000 tons of bombs were dropped. Millions of gallons of poisons were dumped. The US succeeded in defoliating fully 10% of the land of Vietnam” .

The Tet Offensive in January 168 was a joint Viet Cong and Viet Minh attack on US strong points all over South Vietnam. “In a war that had produced too many surprises, none stunned harder then Tet, especially the symbolic assault on the Embassy which had so often declared that the worst was over” . This offensive proved to the US the massive amount of surplus recruits that had never been imagined before the January Offensive. The psychological damage that images beamed into the living rooms of America caused was the catalyst in growing public disapproval of the war.

“The character of the press reports was doom and gloom.”

The surprise wave after wave assault methods of the Viet Cong took a hefty psychological toll on the US and allied troops. This was in combination with the psychological warfare that the Viet Cong and Viet Minh employed everyday. Offensive tactics that included ambush and hit and run as well as anti-personnel weapons like punji sticks and other impaling booby-traps and a variety of horrific mines left troop moral non-existent. The Communist Vietnamese knew that one man in hospital with sever but not fatal injuries would take four or five other men out of the field to care for the injured man.

All of these factors; the lack of total commitment by the American nation in comparison to the Vietnamese fighters, the loss of home front support, the failure if the American tactics and the actual superiority of the tactics of the Viet Cong and Viet Minh contributed to America’s inability to defeat the communist Vietnamese forces up to 175. All attempts at containment by the U.S were thwarted by such means as the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the ability of the Viet Cong to obtain support from South Vietnamese peasants.

essay writing service

Main Ideas

I. There is no federal law in the United States requiring wearing a helmet while riding on a bicycle or a motorcycle.

A. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, state and local helmet laws now apply in states that include more than half of the total population of the US, but actually a much smaller portion of the population is covered, less than 15%, due to the age limitations of the laws.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) National Center for Statistics and Analysis, there are 6 states in the US that do not have universal helmet laws for motorcyclists.

B. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, head injury is a leading cause of death and serious injury in motorcycle crashes.

1. 46% of fatally injured riders were not wearing a helmet.

C. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, there are 85 million bicycle riders in the US

1. About 800 bicyclist die in US every year

. One in eight of the cyclists with reported injuries has a brain injury.

. Two-thirds of the deaths are from traumatic brain injury.

4. Bicyclist hospitalized with head injuries are 0 times as likely to die as those with out.

5. More than 40% of all head injury-related deaths and approximately three-fourths of head injuries occur among children ages 14 and under.

6. Younger children suffer a higher proportion of head injuries than older children.

7. 70% to 80% of all fatal bicycle crashes involve head injuries and only 0% to 5% of all bicyclists wear a helmet

. Unhelmeted riders cost more to treat at the hospital

. Spend a longer time in rehabilitation

4. More likely to require some from of public assistance to pay for medical and rehabilitation.

5. In 11 prior to enacting the helmet law, California’s stare medical insurance program paid $40 million for the treatment of motorcycle-related head injuries.

6. That figure dropped to $4 million after the enactment of a universal helmet law.

7. In a study of Illinois-injured motorcyclists by the NHTSA, the average hospitalization costs for unhelmeted riders were one-third greater than those of helmeted riders ($708 to $585)

8. A privately conducted California study put the average cost of hospital admissions for a non-helmeted rider at $17,704. Of this initial amount, 7% of the costs for hospitalization were paid by the State of California, with another 10% being paid by other tax-based sources.

. According to American Journal of Public Health, the estimated cost of bicycle-related injuries and deaths for all ages is $8 billion.

10. It is expensive to treat bicycle-related injuries because these injuries can endure throughout a lifetime

11. Every $10 bike helmet saves this country $0 in direct costs and an additional $65 in societal costs.

II. Helmet laws translate into lives saved

A. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, helmet laws increase helmet usage which in turn saves lives and reduces head trauma

1. This has been proven numerous times thorough the state fatality data (including Illinois, California, Washington and Louisiana) that allowed comparison of deaths and injuries before and after helmet laws were enacted.

The data continue to prove that motorcycle helmet laws save lives. Government and privately conducted studies support the effectiveness of helmets and the impact of helmet laws in reducing the number of serious injuries and fatalities. The results of these studies are these

. NHTSA estimates that in 16 helmets saved 40 motorcyclists lives.

. NHTSA estimates that helmets saved lives of 674 motorcyclists in 001.

4. If all motorcyclists n 50 states had worn a helmet, that number would have been 14,505

5. Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data indicated that helmets are % effective in reducing fatalities in motorcycle crashes.

6. Helmets cannot protect the rider from most types of bodily injuries, however a recent NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) study showed that motorcycle helmets are 67% effective in preventing a brain injury.

7. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85% and the risk of brain injury by as much as 88%.

8. Bicycle helmets have also been shown to offer substantial protection to the forehead and mid face.

. Making the use of helmets the single most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities resulting from bicycle crashes.

B. A case control study of the effectiveness of bicycle safety helmets was published in the New England journal of Medicine.

1. The study was conducted over a period of one year

. In which the patients were 5 people with head injuries received while bicycling who sought the care at one of five hospitals.

. One control group consisted of 4 persons who received emergency care at the same hospital for bicycling injuries not involving the head.

4. Second group 558 members of a large health maintenance org. who had bicycling accidents during previous year.

5. 7 % of the case patients were wearing helmets at the time of the head injury as compared with 4% of the emergency room controls and % of the second control group.

6. Of the cyclists with serious brain injury only 4% wore helmets.

7. In regression analysis to control for age, sex, cycling experience and the severity of the accident, they found that riders with helmets had an 85% reduction in their risk to head injury and 88% reduction in their brain injury.

Closing A helmet only works if a person wears it, and the most effective means of increasing helmet usage is by enacting helmet laws that cover all riders universal motorcycle and bicycle helmet laws.

We have so many relationships in our lives with so many different people , most of us are happy to begin them and let them flourish without taking second thoughts to think about what could come from them. Relationships , when positive are one of the greatest aspects of our lives and its important for us to have that positive influence. However , when these relationships end it can leave an emptiness far greater than what was there beforehand. To back up what Ive told you I will be talking about peices of related material on Isolation and Loneliness that have resulted from relationships.

In the movie “Here On Earth” Jasper who is played by Josh Hartnett is going out with Samantha who is played by Lee Lee Sebeiski. They have an extremely close relationship but when Samantha falls for another guy Kelley there relationship starts to fall apart.. Samantha abandons Jasper to spend time with Kelly. Its understandale for this to be hard on Jasper , but its made worse by the fact that its a slow process and all he can do is sit back and watch Samantha slip away from him. The main scene which focuses on Isolation is when Jasper asks Samantha to stay with him stay with me Sam , were meant to be together , nobody knows you like I do , nobody sees you like I do , I love you after all that Samantha gets a bus with Kelly. Jasper is left standing alone in the rain with tears in his eyes. This is a very emotional scene because its not often that movies will show males crying as its usually disreguraded in society as being wrong. The bus driving away from him symbolises Samantha is finally shutting him out , turning her back on his and walking away. Its a tear jerking , heart wrenching movie that will touch any heart and explores different aspects of relationships and who they affect. With a variety of songs on the soundtrack its hard not to get involved with the story and feel some kind of emotion for these characters. Here On Earths main theme is relationships and I chose this film because theres two character who suffer from isolation within different relationships. Jasper appears to be the obvious one , however Kelley has been totally isolated from his parents . His mother committed suicide and his father is always working and has no time for Kelley. So isolation can not only occur in boyfriend / girlfriend relatinships but in any type , eg family and friends.

and so this brings me to my final peice of material which is a short story called The Perfect Life. The story is told through the eyes of a teenage girl Sarah who looks upon her best friend Samantha as having the perfect life with the perfect family, until samantha takes her own life. it starts using a very effective flashback technique which we then find out is someone watching a home video that had been recorded a week beforehand. The Perfect Life is about two best friends who have grown up together and shared everything. Through this story the author has brought to life the little things we take for granted , and how we get so caught up in the unimportant things that we miss the big picture thats standing right infront of us crying out to be saved. I chose The Perfect Life because I dont think there is any stronger form of isolation than suicide , of feeling so isolated from the world and the people in it that the only escape is to leave it all behind through death. However , by ending her life of pain through suicide Samantha created a whole new world of pain and isolation for the loved ones she left behind. For Sarah she has to deal with the loss of Samantha and all the questions and all the regrett that will Scar Sarah for life. Once a heart is broken its impossible to put back all the peices and so this brings me to the conclusion of my speech. Everyone is so quick to look at relationships in its positive light but hopefully you will now understand that relationships are not all the glamour theyre made out to be , and if youve ever been dumped , had a falling out with a friend or lost a loved one through death then you will understand exactly where im coming from. Thankyou for listening !

From Depression to Schizophrenia

Some of the behaviors currently accepted in modern society were considered Evil or possession in the 1th century. There are other behaviors that are still considered wrong even by today’s standards. This story is a perfect example of the progression of a treatable condition, Depression, to a harder and almost impossible condition, Schizophrenia. If this story hadn’t taken place in the year 181, the reader would think; “Why didn’t they use proper treatment?”. Since it was conceived of in a simpler time, you can only imagine what types of treatments they tried for these poor inflicted individuals. Since psychology was such a new field, the treatments were often barbaric and more detrimental to the patient than leaving the condition alone. However hard it is to identify, Schizophrenia can progress from a simple neurosis to a complex psychosis if not identified and treated properly. As an example, in paragraph , there is mention of a slight nervous depression. Then in paragraph 6, there is paranoia of getting caught. Finally, in paragraph 7 she feels like she is caught doing something she shouldn’t. This ebb and tide happens about three times in the story. I do not believe that the author is a reliable narrator considering her condition. At the time that this story was written, the narrator and her husband are unaware of her real condition. They only think the author is in severe need of bed rest. This may have been the case in the beginning, but as the story progressed the narrator started seeing things in the wallpaper and felt paranoia whenever talking with her husband and his sister. Had this been identified and the proper changes made, the author would have most likely had a full recovery from the original condition. There are reasons that sanitariums have white walls. The wallpaper should have been changed in the beginning of the story, like she wanted in p47. At this time, physicians felt that patients needed to “tough it out”, and learn to deal with things that they find troublesome. This is known to be unsuccessful in today’s treatments. In fact, even perfectly healthy people change their environments to make themselves more comfortable. Take feng shui for example; books on this practice suggest turning your furniture in different compass directions to make your house stable and help inhabitants to be mentally healthy. I feel that the narrator focused so much on the wallpaper in the room that she started to think of nothing else. Once she made it to this stage, her initial repulsion turned to fascination. That fascination turned to psychosis, and there was no turning back. She went beyond possible help from treatment. This builds from paragraph 165 until the end of the story. Paragraph 187 states that a woman was behind the wall shaking the paper. In the end, she thinks that she is that woman. This story is very sad in its progression from tired to insanity. Happening now, there would be treatments that could have caught it so the patient could live a healthy life.

Cormier, Robert. Heroes. New York Delacorte Press Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, Inc., 18

I liked Larry LaSalle because he helped the kids when he reopened the wreck center. At the same time I dont like Larry LaSalle because he rapped young girls. He started out as a great friend of young people but later in the story we learned that he was only hanging out with them to get to the girls. I would recomend that teenages read this book because it deals with alot of early relationship issues. I would not recomend this book to younger audiences because I dont think they would be able to relate to all of the issues that are addressed in the story.

Francis Cassavant was a very shy and reserved seventh grade student at St. Judes Parochial School when one day he saw the girl who would change his life forever, Nicole Renard. Nicole would speak to Francis but Francis couldnt find the courage to speak back. After some time he eventually began a friendly relationship with Nicole through a mutual friend. Then through his job at Lauiers Durg Store Francis and Nicole became closer and closer until they finally began a serious relationship.

All of the children in Frenchtown hung out at the newly reopened Wreck Center which was said to be a place of bad luck. Larry LaSalle was the man who reopened the Wreck Center. He taught many classes at the Wreck Center and took a lot of time with the children in Frenchtown. He taught Nicole to dance and Francis to play table tennis and in return became very close to both of them. Then in December 141 Larry volunteered to go to war in W W II and the Wreck Center had to be closed.

While serving in W W II Larry LaSalle captured a enemy machine-gun nest and was awarded the Silver Star for acts of heroism. He came home July , 14, to Frenchtown on furlough. He of course got a heros welcome complete with parade and party. Near the end of the welcoming he took all the children that he used to teach to the Wreck Center for their own party. At the end of the night all that were left was Larry, Francis and Nicole. Larry tried to convince Francis to leave but Nicole asked him to stay. Francis finally walked to the door of the center and hid in a small foyer. While there he heard noises but did not go back into the room where Larry and Nicole were. While in the foyer Francis realized that Larry was raping but didnt do anything about it. Four days later Nicole finally talked to Francis and ended their relationship. Francis inturn wanted to kill himself but his first attempt was not well planned so he didnt go through with it.

Francis decided to forge his birth certificate and enlist in the Army so that he could go to war and be killed. While serving in

W W II Francis threw himself on a gernade but didnt die; his face was blown off and he became a hero because he saved his platoon. He was sent home where he immediately started forming a plot to kill Larry LaSalle and to see Nicole. While in town, trying to be unnoticed, he overheard that Larry was back home and the address where he lived. He went to his house to kill him but Larry told him that he knew he needed to die but would do it himself. On the way out of Larrys apartment building Francis heard a gun shot and knew that Larry was dead. He then went to St. Judes and spoke to an old teacher who told him where to find Nicole. When he found her they talked and rekindled their friendship.

Francis Joseph Cassavant is the main character. He was 15 when the story starts and 18 when the story ends. He went through alot of changes throughout the story. The one thing about him that never changed was the way he felt about a girl named Nicole Renard. He went to a catholic school then joined the Army. He is a round and dynamic character. Nicole Renard was also talked about throughout the book. She moved into Frenchtown, from Albany, New York, with her parents. After awhile she started dating Francis. She was basically a normal teenage girl. She was flat and static. Larry LaSalle was also talked about throughout the story. He was a good person in the beginning of the book, but turned out to be a very bad person in the end. He was also round and dynamic.

A person vs. themselves conflict in the story was when Francis was going to kill himself because his girlfriend broke up with him when he didnt save her from Larry LaSalle. A person vs. person conflict was when Nicole confronted Francis about not helping her when Larry LaSalle attacked her in the wreck center. A person vs. person conflict was when Francis went to Larry LaSalles apartment to kill him for what he did to Nicole.

The story takes place in Frenchtown, a community in Monument. It was before, during and after W W II. The tone of the story was mostly very serious. Sometimes more intense than others. Especially when the person vs. person conflicts occure and when he remembers things about the war.

One example of situational irony in this story was when Francis signed up to go to war so that he would die and unstead got hurt severly and came home a hero. Also situational irony occured when Francis went to Larrys apartment with every intention to kill him and unstead Larry wound up killing himself. Aslo situational irony occured when Francis, who was so devoted to Nicole, actually left her there with Larry even though she ask him not to, but this enclosed verbal irony as well because he didnt actually leave and he said he was going to. Some forshadowing occured in the story when Francis prayed for and said he was going to kill Larry but you still didnt know why. Then the story builds up around Larry, Francis, and Nicole. Symbolism occures in the book in the form of Francis face. It was blown off in an attempt to kill himself to get rid of his guilty feeling for what he let happen.

I believe the personal theme of Heroes is guilt because Francis every goal in the story revolves around what he let happen to Nicole. Him going to war, his face being blown off in an attempted suiside, and him killing Larry LaSalle were all actions that formed from Francis guilt.

Blood and power are intoxicants” Fyodor Dostoevsky. In the first five chapters of The Lord of the Flies, William Golding illustrates many various efforts towards how good and evil has been portrayed through the main characters Ralph, Jack and Piggy.

Throughout the novel Ralph exhibits many traits and actions that tell the read why he is not fit for his role. One is these is his incapability to command respect from the group. To be a successful leader one must, above all else demand respect. They must be someone followers can look up to. Leaders must inspire fear in their people. Ralph lacks the ability to strike fear into his followers because they went against what he had asked of them. Simon says this after the boys failed to listen to Ralph in helping build the shelters “You’re chief. You tell ‘em off.”(51) This shows that Ralph had not commanded respect from the group, because if they did respect Ralph, they would never go against him, and would fear him. Again Ralph’s evident lack of respect is shown when Jack speaks out without the conch. ‘The rules!” shouted Ralph, ‘you’re breaking the rules!’(). Jack replies with the quote ‘Who cares?’() This displays Ralph’s failure to act as the authority figure, the grown-up, who acquires respect from all under his authority.

Jack is described by Golding as tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger. Jack is the leading advocate of anarchy on the island. Jack is the leader of the savage tribe, which hunts the pigs.

Opposed to Ralph and Piggy on almost all matters, Jack represents the id of one’s personality - he supports the conception that one’s desires are most important and should be followed, regardless of reason or morals. Jack is the kind of person, which Golding believed everyone would eventually become if left alone to set one’s own standards and live the way one naturally wanted. Golding believed that the natural state of humans is chaos and that man is inherently evil. When reason is abandoned, only the strong survive. Jack personifies this idea perfectly.

When on this island the boys lose sight of sense and being rescued by taking up practices and adventures such as hunting and tribal dances. Take Jack for example, in our modern day society, the kind of child that Jack is would simply be labelled a ‘little snot.’ He is an arrogant, power thirsting boy who craves stature and knows how to reach the top; he could be compared to a ruthless businessman of our times. His personality can be summarized to evil. In the Lord of the Flies, Jack is indeed responsible for a majority of bad events and trickery. Whether it is stealing fire, even though it would have been given, or leading people away from the one person who wants to help them and get them saved. This to me shows a comparison to Satan and Jesus. Jack much like Satan tempted the children to join his camp through games, meat and hunting.

Furthermore Ralph much like Jesus offered a stable but fulfilled life through shelters, rules and regulations. Ralph does not impose these rules to be cruel and mean, but so things run in order and everyone is benefited. When comparing Ralph to Jesus it is only in the fact that in order for people to be saved they should follow Ralph, but Jack tempts them and they leave. Because Ralph himself although a better and fairer leader is not at all perfect and has significant weakness in his personality as well.

Ralph to falls victim to the temptation of hunting and savagery and on page 188 he joins in with the murder of Simon. Jack invites everyone to his camp for a feast of meat that they gained through a bloody death of a sow. Ralph goes to have a look and is curious through this temptation and then gets caught up in the dance and murder frenzy.

In the Lord of the Flies Piggy seems to take up the role of a disabled person, he can never join in and is constantly teased for this reason of simply being different. This creates an extremely low self-esteem problem and this brings out his personality weaknesses. Piggy always has a suggestion at the assemblies and always gives his point of view, by doing this. He makes himself venerable and the others take advantage. When Ralph made up the rules of the conch on page 4, Piggy is the first boy to take the conch out of Ralph’s hand and say something. To me this shows that for Piggy to gather up confidence he needs to look outside of himself for a source of power.

The island is constantly abused, through fires, stripping of the fruit trees and the littl’uns even go to the toilet wherever they please in this perfect paradise of theirs. This is a perfect example of humanity finding an undisturbed place and eventually ruining it.

Finally, when society becomes corrupt the group of boys primarily falls apart because there was no consequence to their actions. We must remember that leadership is the wise use of power, and power is the potential to interpret objectives into actuality and maintain it. “Leadership is the wise use of power. Power is the capacity to translate intention into reality and sustain it” Martin Luther King Junior. What would come of a society in the world today if it were unlawful, and our leaders did not understand how to use the power that had been rendered upon them?

An individual is greatly influenced by the way he/she looks in the public arena. In this modern and even post-modern era, we now try to focus on one word “individuality”. Individuality is very important as with this we are able to show to the world what we really what to be and this can make us happy and content on the basis that we have achieved something personal and meaningful.

To create an image one usually has to change his/her personal appearance. This can be done in many different ways, for example, dressing up differently, or using cosmetic surgery to enhance and reduce the effects of ageing and diminishing beauty.

Michael Jackson, one of the world’s most popular singers, recently was given a private interview on his life and his ideas about becoming an individual. He has used the powers of cosmetic surgery to help him be a different person. He said that he hated what he looked like before, and wanted to change it. This lead to a big controversy to the idea on why one would spend so much money to change his face, and in Michael’s case change his image differently to the way he hoped it would be.

Another major controversy about image “presentation” is homosexuality. There is still some feeling of misunderstanding between homosexuals and those who were considered to be the “norm”. Homosexuals at times try to present their image of homosexuality through different ways, usually through dress in drag. For example “The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert” sparked much controversy about gay men. And they were only trying to promote their image and how they’re not afraid to show it because it shows their individuality.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Appearance is everything

essay writing service

Some other ways of changing ones image is piercing and tattooing. Today, there are lots of young adults that have pierced their tongues, bellybuttons etc. they are showing an image that they want to be different from others and that they want to be recognised as an individual rather than a member of the conforming society. Tattooing has also become popular as they now can be done for a rather small price compared to cosmetic surgery, and that it is a better way of showing their individuality as something meaningful and personal can be tattooed.

This theory in to being a more individual is great as it no longer has us locked in like the rest of the conformer. The problem is those that lie with the obscene ideas that have been used. The practical changes all occur skin deep, and this does not fully change our image as our inner ideas may still be considered.

Origins of equity

Before we go any further with our discussion of equity, let me explain that when we use the phrase the common law and equity, we are employing a specialised sense of the word equity. Indeed, in many publications you will find the words capitalised Common Law and Equity.

In its general or everyday sense, equity means fairness or justice. However, as used in the present context, equity refers to a particular set of principles that are the product of one set of English courts. The principles of equity had quite a different origin from the rules of common law. These principles were developed by the Lord Chancellors of the King in response to petitions from people dissatisfied, for one reason or another, with the decisions of the courts established by the King (i.e. the Courts of Common Pleas, Exchequer and Kings Bench), which were applying the common law, as we have already seen. The Lord Chancellor, who in medieval times was the principal adviser and minister of the King, was from the fourteenth century increasingly requested to examine such petitions received by the King or members of his Council. At first, the Lord Chancellor reported back with advice as to what should be done, but by the end of the fifteenth century it was usual for him to deal with these petitions himself, and for the petitions to be addressed to him directly. He then set up a separate court called the Court of Chancery (i.e. of the Chancellor) where he dealt with these matters.

The Lord Chancellors at that time were usually high officers of the Roman Catholic Church, not lawyers, so the principles they expressed were originally largely based on Christian principles and morality. As time went by, however, the Lord Chancellors and the judges who were appointed in the Court of Chancery ceased to be Churchmen and were usually lawyers who had practised in the Court, so that the principles of equity which they developed were modified and not so closely linked with Church teaching. The principles adopted by the Lord Chancellors and the Court of Chancery were, however, consciously based upon notions of fairness or equity, so they came to be described as principles of equity.

Effects on rules of the common law

The principles of equity had basically three different effects upon the rules of common law to confirm them, to supplement them, or to contradict them.

confirm the common law

If the court of Chancery saw nothing unfair or inequitable in a decision based on the common law, would reject the petition, and decline to intervene in the matter. In such cases, equity was said to confirm or follow the common law.

supplement the common law

Sometimes the Court of Chancery would intervene in proceedings in the common law courts, not to interfere with the decision, but to provide some procedures or remedies that were better than the common law courts could provide. Thus, the Court of Chancery held that it could order a party to proceedings to answer questions on oath (called interrogatories) about facts within his or her knowledge relating to the claim; to reveal all documents relevant to the proceedings in his or her possession (discovery of documents); and then to produce them for inspection by the other party so that the other party could see them, and copy them (discovery of documents). (In this usage, the word discovery is used in the sense of disclosure or revealing.) In this way, trials could be speeded up, and adjournments on the grounds of surprise largely eliminated.

Again, the Court of Chancery held that it could issue an order prohibiting a party to proceedings from doing something unlawful (injunction), and an order directing that a party specifically perform the terms of a contract (order of specific performance). Both these remedies were often much more useful for enforcing the rights of a party than was an order that the other party pay damages, which was all that a court of common law could provide.

In such cases, Equity was not following the common law, nor was it contradicting it; rather it was said to supplement the common law.

contradict the common law

Sometimes the Court of Chancery would intervene to contradict certain rules of common law that it considered produced a very unfair or inequitable result. Some examples will demonstrate how such principles of equity evolve.

a) property to be held on trust for benefit of another

The Court of Chancery held that if property was given to a person on the basis of that persons assurance that the property would be used for the benefit of certain persons or purposes, it would be quite unfair or inequitable if that person should use that property for his or her own benefit, even though under the common law he or she was the lawful owner of the property. In this way the Council of Chancery evolved the equitable principle of trust that overrode the common law rights of ownership of property.

• An example of this is seen in Aberdeen Town Council v Aberdeen University (187) App Cas 544 (Reading .8).

The House of Lords held that the Aberdeen Town Council, which had been given certain property to hold in trust for the endowment of four professorships at Aberdeen University, could not later lease that property to itself, and use the income for its own purposes.

b) prudence in dealing with trust property

The Courts of Chancery went further and held that a person who has been given property to hold in trust for the benefit of others must not only act within the terms of the powers given by the person establishing the trust, but must also act with reasonable prudence with regard to the trust property, bearing in mind that it is held for the benefit of the persons or purposes indicated by the person establishing the trust.

• This is exemplified in re Whiteley (1886) Ch D 47

In this decision the Court of Appeal held that trustees had failed to act in accordance with principles of equity when, although empowered by the trust instrument to make investments of trust monies, they made a loan to a brick making business that shortly afterwards went bankrupt. Since this investment was considered by the court to be imprudent because the business was a speculative enterprise and not financially sound, the trustees were required to make good the loss they had caused.

c) misrepresentation or mistake in making of contract

The Court of Chancery further held that if a person entered into a contract on the basis of a misrepresentation made by the other party to the contract, or on the basis of a mistake that was induced by, or known to, the other party, then it was inequitable that that person should be bound by the contract, even though under the common law he or she was absolutely bound by the contract.

• This can be demonstrated by Solle v Butcher [14] All ER 1107 (Reading . 10). The Court of Appeal of England held that a contract for the tenancy of a flat could be rescinded by the landlord since both the landlord and the tenant thought when making the agreement that the flat was, because of alterations made to it, no longer bound by the restriction on rent imposed by rent restriction legislation, which in fact was not correct.

In such cases, when the principles of equity were in conflict with the rules of common law, the Court of Chancery would issue an injunction to prevent the common law decision being enforced, and would provide its own remedies, e.g. injunction, order to account.

Relationship between Equity and Common Law

Naturally the courts of common law, i.e. the Courts of Common Pleas, Exchequer and Kings Bench, were not happy about the intervention of the Courts of Chancery when they overrode their decisions and the Chief Justices of the courts of common law protested vigorously to the King. In 1601, however, the King ruled that if there was conflict between the rules of common law and the principles of equity, the principles of equity must prevail. This ruling was based partly upon the fact that the Chancellors were historically exercising powers delegated to them by the King and Council; partly upon the fact that the principles of equity were supposed to be more fair and equitable then the rules of common law; and partly upon a belief by the King, James I, that the Lord Chancellor would be more likely to support the interests of the Crown than would the stiff-necked Chief Justices of the common law courts at that time, who had started to show a tendency to question the extent of the Kings legal powers.

From then on, the Court of Chancery continued to exercise its Jurisdiction and develop the principles of equity, sometimes endorsing and following the rules of common law, sometimes supplementing the common law to make court proceedings more expeditious and effective, but sometimes contradicting it and providing rights or duties that overrode the rights and duties established by the common law.

Merger of Common Law and Equity

As we have seen, by the nineteenth century there were in England two systems of laws and two systems of courts common law, which was applied by the Court of Common Pleas, Court of Exchequer and Court of Kings Bench; and equity, which was applied by the Court of Chancery.

It was clearly unsatisfactory for litigants to have to take proceedings in two different courts, first a common law court, and then the Court of Chancery, before they could have access to all the fights, procedures and remedies that were available to them, and before they could be sure that their legal rights and duties had been fully and finally determined.

In the early nineteenth century, steps were taken to deal with this situation by enacting legislation that provided that

• the Court of Chancery could provide the remedy of damages available in the common law courts, i.e. Chancery Amendments Acts 185 and 1858; and

• the common law courts could provide the procedures and remedies available in the Court of Chancery, i.e. Common Law Procedure Acts 185 and 1858.

A much more radical step was taken in 1875 when the Judicature Act 187, which came into force in 1875, abolished the common law Courts of Common Pleas, Exchequer and Kings Bench and also the Court of Chancery. At the same time it merged their jurisdiction into a High Court, which was to sit in divisions corresponding to the former Courts, but any judge of which could exercise any of its jurisdiction.

From then on the separate court system was abolished, and although at first the rules of common law and principles of equity still tended to be handled rather separately, in time they have become intermingled and inter-mixed so as to make up one composite body of law, which is often nowadays referred to as common law, but in fact contains the modifications introduced by equity.

One of the things that I have chosen to write about is the issue of violence against women. One of the reflection questions that I have found in the book asked how boys in your community learn to respect women and disrespect women. I think a lot of the men’s disrespectfulness towards women starts at a young age due when boys start having to be the “cool” kid. A lot of times when little boys start thinking that girls have cooties or they are gross. When this happens boys start to act very rude and superior towards girls so they will not get made fun of. I think a lot of times boys. I think as they get older the aggressiveness starts in a man. When they get into high school a lot of guys treat women with little respect because they are suppose to be big and bad. I think that to teach our men to be respectful they need to be taught at a young age. One way to teach your child to be respectful to women is to treat them like you would like to be treated and anything less is disrespectful. Another important factor is to teach your kid to be an individual and not to always follow the crowd. By being an individual you can decide what is right and wrong easier then having the influence of all your friends. I think another big part of teaching our kids to respect women is to teach them young what is right or wrong. Teaching them that name calling or being inappropriate at any time is disrespectful and is not tolerated. I think that when the parents practice these good values maybe one day boys will know what is right and stop disrespecting women.

On another topic I chose to talk about family. I found a question in the book that talked asked what changes are necessary to involve men in parenting. I think a big part in involving men in parenting is for the dads to plan ahead of time things that they can do with there kids and to be involved in their lives. Just because many men cannot be there all the time during the day they can still interact greatly. Just asking your child at dinner how there day went shows a great deal of concern and interest in there life. Also maybe they can set aside some special time on the weekend to spend with their kids. It doesn’t take much to do this so there is no excuse for dads not to be an important part in a child’s life.

Another topic from the book talks about family and who do you consider family. I consider my close family to be my mom, dad, and my sister. But I don’t think family has to be just immediate blood relatives. I consider some of m close friends to be family too. Some things that you would do for your family you would do the same for your friends. I feel like I am very lucky to have such a close and caring family.

Overall I feel that the readings in the book are very interesting and helpful for many to realize that not everybody is the same. The one thing about these readings is that they opened my eyes to the many different types of families and how one is not better then the other. I feel that these topics are very important in today’s society. Some of the topics like violence against women need to change but for someone to change they need to realize that what they are doing is bad. I think that this book will open peoples eyes to the many problems that arise in our day and that they need to be changed.

Like many of George Orwells other essays, Shooting an Elephant reads like a story, and so keep in mind that this is an essay-that is, this is based on actual events in Orwells life. In Notes on Dali, Orwell writes that [a]utobiography is only to be trusted when it reveals something disgraceful. A man who gives a good account of himself is probably lying, since any life when viewed from the inside is simply a series of defeats. In his essay Shooting an Elephant, Orwell definitely reveals something disgraceful about himself and about the system he was born into and worked as a policeman to uphold. What is Orwells purpose in writing so honestly about his own disgrace? This essay is about more than it appears to comment upon colonialism Orwell writes a narrative essay about a day he felt obliged to shoot an elephant. He blends his criticism with his narrative and eventually turns the narrative itself into a critique. He probes an event in his life to gain insight into his decisions, thoughts, motivations, and emotions. He also writes about his own experiences in an attempt to educate others. In his essay Why I Write Orwell explains I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, and my initial concern is to get a hearing. But I could not do the work of writing a book, or even a long magazine article, if it were not also an aesthetic experience. Orwell employs a number of rhetorical strategies to make the essay worth reading and to keep the reader engaged, both intellectually and emotionally, with his work.

The opening sentence signals Orwells sardonic wit. He captures the readers attention with his statement, I was hated by large numbers of people-the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me (58). He then goes on to provide general information about his life as a sub-divisional police officer. After briefly outlining life for the colonizers, he provides an outline of life for the colonized Burmese people interspersed with admissions of his growing disillusion with his job and imperialism in general.
