Speeches are written to amuse and persuade the audience and eventually lead them to agree with the speaker’s views. Pericles is an example of an orator, who spoke about his funeral oration. An oration is a persuasive speech intended to inspire and incite people to action. It is often called the art of persuasion. Carefully planned, an oration has certain recognizable parts such as the opening, the narration of facts, the definition of terms to be explained, the intention, evidence addressing the arguments for or against the proposition, a contradiction of the opposing arguments, and the conclusion summarizing the arguments. In order for Pericles to go about these parts, he must use the three rhetorical devices pathos, ethos, and logos to help the audience support his views more easily.

Rhetorical devices are the art of oratory, speaking, or writing effectively. The first type of rhetorical device in which Pericles uses is pathos. Pathos persuades the listeners with the orator’s emotions and feelings about the social issue. Pericles uses pathos in both the opening and closing scene. Pericles begins his speech by saying the total opposite of what the audience expects. He allows the audience to know how he feels about his glory of being an Athenian. For example, Pericles says “I will speak first of our ancestors, for it is right and seemly that now, when we are lamenting the dead, a tribute should be paid to their memory” (Thucydides 74) The closing scene summarizes the arguments and stirs up the audience. He mentions glory in a woman, which shows his personal feelings to persuade the audience one last time.

The second type of rhetorical device that Pericles uses is ethos. Ethos is a bit different because it discusses the morals and issues that the Athenians came across. Pericles uses ethos in his introduction because Pericles gives the audience credibility. He also uses ethos during the proposition to clarify the points and state what he wants to prove, and in the confirmation to address the arguments for and against the proposition. Dying for the country is an example, and Pericles uses the following quote to justify this “The sacrifice which they collectively made was individually repaid to them for they received again each one for himself a praise which grows not old, and the noblest of all tombs, I speak not of that in which their remains are laid, but of that in which their glory survives, and is proclaimed always and on every fitting occasion both in word and deed” (75).

The final rhetorical devise is logos. Logos or logic is the facts and information in the speech, such as “If we turn to our military policy, there also we differ from out antagonists. We throw open our city to the world, and never by alien acts exclude foreigners from any opportunity of learning or observing” (75). Pericles uses this in his narration because it is the recital of facts. Pericles uses facts when he gives proof that the city is open to the world, and that they have no periodical deportations in order to prevent people observing or finding out secrets which might have been military advantage to the enemy. He proves this by using the Spartans and their allies as examples.

Therefore, rhetorical devices are a big part in changing an audience’s opinion. Rhetorical devices concentrate on the three main principals that are needed to get a point across. The devices also help appeal to audience’s religious, moral, and patriotic emotions drastically. Pericles always tried to communicate a sense of the glory of being an Athenian, which also helped persuade them. Pericles also appeals to his audience by using language to which they were accustomed.

INTRODUCTION

Is it possible to discover any objective truth, or is all knowledge subject to relativism?

In this essay, I aim to provide evidence through the exploration of early Greek philosophy literature, that it is possible to discover some objective knowledge.

I will briefly describe the development of philosophy and look at the various theories of objective knowledge and relativism, with emphasis on philosophers such as, Protagoras, Socrates, and Plato.

Buy cheap One of the longest- running debates in philosophy is whether it is possible to discover any objective truth, or whether all knowledge is relative to the subject. term paper

I will pose a number of questions including

Does all knowledge come from experience?

Can relativism sustain high moral standards?

These questions and others will I hope lead to a better understanding of these two perspectives.

...Logical thought is alone true knowledge (Plato, Republic)

Brief history of philosophy

Before philosophy took root in ancient Greece, the view of the world was very different.

People saw themselves as the centre of reality.

The Greek Gods were very much like them and took an avid interest in what they did in their everyday lives.

The world was a place for human beings to conquer and explore.

The first philosophers saw the world in a new light.

They did not think reality necessarily centred around human beings.

People were just a small part of a bigger picture.

The world was a source of questions How does the world work?

What is it made of?

This study of the world became known as cosmology, it had little to do with peoples everyday lives.

It progressed through various theories with Thales believing that the world was based on water, while Heraclitus said it was made of fire, whereas Pythagoras stated it was an embodiment of numbers.

Although initially these philosophers focused on cosmology, it was not long before they began concentrating on human-orientated ideas.

This made way for a group of philosophers known as the Sophists.

SOPHISTS

Their main concern was political issues and how individuals could gain from interaction with others.

They believed that people should do whatever it takes to become successful, and this form of behaviour could be different for different people.

This is known as relativism.

The Sophists were as such the first relativist philosophers.

PROTAGORAS AND REALTIVISM

Protagoras was a sophist who thought that the Gods were inaccessible to human knowledge.

In modern terms we might say that he displays the attitude of a Secular humanist who is agnostic about God, and who promotes human freedom and responsibility (Cleary, 00 -6)

The most famous work by Protagoras was entitled Truth.

In this piece he seems to deny the possibility of any objective truth, this is reflected in the following quote

Man is the measure of all things, of things that are as to how they are, and of things that are not as to how they are not

The overall meaning of this quote suggests that whatever appears true to each person is actually true for that person.

Does this doctrine actually make sense?

Surely if everyones opinion is equally valid and true, then how can Protagoras be an authority on any subject if his opinion can be contradicted by someone else with a point that is also valid?

GEORGIAS

Another dominant figure in Athens was Georgias.

He had a unique style of public speaking, which captivated his audience, yet he also felt that human beings could not grasp the idea or concept of reality as our language binds us.

He used the example of many words referring to the same thing.

Georgias states Between language and reality there is a gulf which humans can not cross because we live in a realm of opinion

For Georgias the use of rhetoric was political.

There was no evidence to presume that he cared about the moral value of his listeners decisions.

Both Protagoras and Georgias seem to think that people can be persuaded to change their minds via a good speaker or adapt themselves to fit in with their peers or society.

With this in mind, can relativism sustain high moral standards?

Judging by the evidence from Georgias and Protagoras human beings can be persuaded to go against their original belief and accommodate a new one whether it is morally just or not.

One can argue of course that we frequently do live in accordance with our beliefs and moral judgements, but there may be subjective preferences or expressions of feelings.

The outcome is, does it matter what people believe, or does it matter what they believe about belief?

RELATIVISM - What is it?

We can not assume that relativism means the same thing to everyone.

What we can deduce is that different individuals and groups can have different standards for how to act.

In this view nature does not decide how people behave, but individuals make their own decisions, persuading others of a truth whether in fact it is true or not.

This is still very important today, some examples are found in Politicians, Doctors, Professors each one in their own way convince us of a certain truth regardless of fact.

If relativism seems void of moral standards then can we presume objective truth or knowledge exists?

SOCRATES

Not all philosophers believed that justice was a vehicle for self-centred people.

Socrates was very much an opponent of sophistic thinking.

He is most famous for his method of teaching rather than what he actually taught.

He used a method called elenchus, which depended on forcing his opponent to say what he believed, and then going step by step through the implications of these beliefs, the initial definition then leads to a contradiction and so is no longer true.

Truth is something we all approve of and aim to achieve, but what is it?

Anything we say may be criticised in many ways, only one of which is for failing to state the truth. Failure to do that seems somehow to be the most basic kind of failure.

Is truth a relation between what we say and the subject we say it about? Again, we are back to relativism.

For Socrates, definition was not simply logical; it was moral as well. He allowed people to think more carefully about their ideas of virtue.

Socrates was a humanist, but his questions sought single, absolute answers, a universal notion of justice. He says to Crito in Euthydemus But what is this knowledge and what are we to do with it? For it is not the source of any works, which are neither good nor evil, or of any knowledge, but the knowledge of itself. What then can it be, and what are we to do with it? Shall we say Crito, that it is the knowledge by which we are to make other men good?

Socrates held a passionate belief that knowledge was possible. He felt that once the half-thought-out ideas that individuals hold were cleared away, then a search for the truth could begin.

PLATO

Most of what we know of Socrates ideas come in the guise of Plato and his dialogues which have Socrates as a central figure.

Sometimes its hard to know where Socrates ends and Plato begins.

Plato went beyond the Socratic method of refutation when he introduced the method of hypothesis that is found in the Meno and Phaedo dialogues.

In the Meno Plato introduces the idea that virtue is knowledge and he proposes that there should be teachers of it. If there are no genuine teachers of virtue, then it seems that virtue can not be the same thing as knowledge contrary to what Socrates thought (Cleary,00 5-)

Plato felt that we are all born with an understanding of ideal reality. The problem is, most of us forget what we were born knowing because the appearance of things fools us. Although we may forget ideal reality, we can sometimes remember it again. Plato called this anamnesis to explain how we can know things even if we have never experienced them.

Platos dialogues created an ingenious device for the examination of ideas, the purpose of which is to draw us in to the conversation.

Platonic thinking recognised that human science and technology can discover how things work, what it can not do is tell us why.

Is it then possible to teach all forms of knowledge?

I think for Plato, knowledge is what has a precise content of which we can give a definition. In the Meno if something for example, virtue is knowledge, then can it be taught? Real knowledge for Plato, had to be of the abstract and eternal. Plato is often called a rationalist, someone who believes we can know true ideas without ever learning them from experience.

CONCLUSION

This essay is just an overview of the theories of relativism and objective knowledge. Just as our perception of reality is bound by our language, this essay is bound by word-count.

In conclusion, it seems that relativism takes the view that there are no fixed or absolute standards in relation to knowledge about the world, moral behaviour and many other aspects of human life. The problem with this is that the behaviour of some people is so extreme and unpleasant to society that it is difficult to reconcile this with it being just another relativist form of human conduct.

Greek philosophy is ultimately not about facts or answers; it is about discussion - the give and take of ideas. Platos use of dialogue demonstrates this.

If there are flaws in relativism, then is objective knowledge a possibility?

It seems apparent that objective truth is something inherent in human beings. On the surface, there are many convincing reasons for thinking that all knowledge comes from experience, yet the thought that knowledge can only come from experience leaves the possibility of empirical knowledge virtually out of the question. Socrates says that true belief and knowledge guide correctly and that if man possesses these, he gives correct guidance.

It seems although individuals do adapt to society, they hold true to themselves as human beings and in turn use this as an invisible measure by which to live by.

The evidence for the possibility of objective knowledge can be somewhat vague but it seems to have fewer flaws than relativism. Although I have not proved that there is objective truth this was my aim at the start of the essay. There is enough substantiation to suggest its existence.

Qianlong succeeded his father in 176 and was thoroughly grounded in the art of emperorship. At the age of 65 he noticed a young imperial bodyguard, Heshen. Heshen soon became Qianlong¡¦s favorite and was promoted to Imperial Household within two years. He was openly corrupted. Heshen had for 0 years disposed of the patronage of the Empire. In this source, Emperor Jiaqing condemned Heshen with a list of the ¡§twenty great crimes¡¨.

This source gives information on both the nature and the causes of decline in Qing government towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign. It has revealed the weaknesses of the Qing dynasty, which already occurred at the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign. This source pointed out that administrative inefficiency, widespread corruption and the degradation of the Manchus and the Bannermen were the main causes of decline in Qing towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign. These factors also triggered internal rebellions and together with the humiliating exploitation of the West several years later, the Qing dynasty became very weak. This source also contributed in explaining the nature of decline in Qing at the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign, which led to the question of whether the Qing was undergoing a dynastic cycle, and whether this dynastic cycle was inevitable to an absolute monarchy.

This source shows that at the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign, China was plagued with serious administrative, military and moral problems. Emperor Kangxi once said, ¡§Now that the country is at peace, it is advisable that you avoid trouble¡¨. The source shows that Heshen assumed as little responsibility as possible¡Xon several occasions he deliberately delayed or even hid the memorial sent to the Emperor. This is shown in point five, where he delayed consideration of military memorials from the various army commands. This is again shown in point nine, which pointed out that Heshen did not inform the Emperor on border affairs. This became a ¡§habit¡¨. Generals prolonged campaigns against rebels to increase their chances for embezzlement and led to the degradation of bannermen. The widespread corruption was also one of the causes of decline in Qing dynasty. Although corruption had always been a problem, Heshen made it widespread at different levels. When Heshen¡¦s family properties were confiscated and inventoried it was found that the properties he and his family held were even more precious than the ones in the imperial treasury. In points thirteen to eighteen it is clear that Heshen led a way of life far beyond his salary. He also had his buildings built of a precious wood and patterns mimicking the imperial style. He also held uncountable quantities of gold, silver, clothing and jewels. Point one also shows that he was attempting to bribe and gain merit by showing support to Jiaqing in 175 who was going to be the Crown Prince. Point twenty also supports the idea which Heshen had succeeded in corrupting almost the whole governing apparatus and had influenced people at different levels. This point shows that even the low-ranking slaves of the He family were able to hold properties equivalent to two million ounces of silver. This number was way beyond their salaries. Heshen was oblivious to the lives of ordinary people, evident in point 1 that He set up his own pawnshops and banks, competing with mean people for profit. He had led the trend towards luxury and massive spending.

Help with essay on the nature and causes of decline in Qing government towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign?

cheap essay writing service

¡§The Twenty Crimes of Heshen¡¨ also gives information on the nature of decline in Qing government towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign. It especially supports the idea of ¡§favouritism¡¨¡Xwhen a man is secure of the emperor¡¦s favor and approbation, it is very likely that corruption would occur. Point one in the source shows the power Heshen held. He knew about the confidential Imperial Edict (which stated the selection of Crown Prince) and was able to use it as a tool to gain merit. He endless power was also shown in point two, three and four. He was able to escape from punishment even when he had disrespected Emperor Qianlong by breaking the rules in the Palace. His abuses of power were innumerable, which was also stated in point twelve¡Xhe dismissed people who were blocking him from taking full control in the government. He was able to interfere in political affairs (shown in point seven) and he usurped all functions of the Board of Revenue, shown in point 8, which also states that he eliminated all oppositions. Heshen¡¦s cronies were all placed in important positions (shown in point eleven) even when they were incapable to handle the job. Point 10 states that Heshen disobeyed Jiaqing¡¦s Edict and this shows that he was in control of everything¡Xhe didn¡¦t have to listen to the Emperor. Since he had this endless power, nobody could stop him from doing anything, for example setting up his own pawnshops and banks, competing with mean people for profit (point 1). He was able to defy the law with the power he held. This source shows the total lack of the body of statute law. The nature of decline in Qing Government was already set.

There are also underlying facts that this source shows about the nature of decline. Point two and three point out the characteristics of an absolute monarchy¡Xthe divine right of Emperor and the government that totally depends on one man. Point thirteen also points out the ¡§superior¡¨ position the Emperor had¡Xpeople believed that the Emperor was appointed by God. These points show historians the special rights given to the Emperor (for example only the Emperor was permitted to ride horseback or to be carried in a sedan chair on the grounds of the imperial palaces). A government that depends solely on one man lacks political representation (no means of checking the abuse of power) and the cabinet system. Point six is another example showing the power that an Emperor holds¡Xhe is above the law. Jiaqing stated in this point that ¡§Heshen showed no sorrow¡¨ when Qianlong died and also condemned Heshen ¡§heartless and deranged¡¨. This clearly shows that Jiaqing believed an Emperor had the absolute right to control people¡¦s emotion.

Although this source gives evidence showing the causes and nature of decline in Qing towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign, it lacks information. Population pressure, intellectual irresponsibility, internal rebellions and Western competition also contributed to the causes of decline in Qing towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign. The land increase was less than fifty percent whereas the population had increased by more than a hundred percent. This led to internal rebellions¡Xthe poor, displaced and the unemployed turned to the secret societies that were all anti-Manchu and wanted to restore the Ming. Whoever embraced the objective was welcome to join and attracted the lower classes who felt neglected by the Qing government. There were a number of rebellions, including the White Lotus Rebellion (176-1804), the first great peasant uprising in China in modern times. Constant rebellions (big and small scale) had weakened Manchu rule¡Xsuppression was expensive. Intellectual irresponsibility also led to the decline of Qing at the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign. The scholars were under constant threat of literary inquisitions, and they wouldn¡¦t concentrate on contemporary society and politics. They sought refuge in antiquarian studies, where learning could remain safely divorced from reality. The society had lost track of the importance of the unity of knowledge and action. They did little help to solve the Qing government¡¦s problems. Towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign the economic foundation had been badly weakened, especially when the tributary system had been disrupted when the European started independent trading in Asia (outside the range of the Chinese tributary system).

This source does not mention the nature of the Manchu political system¡XManchus were not permitted to engage in trade or farming. They hired the Chinese to till their land. This dependence had soon become irresponsibility. The nature of decline in Qing was laid when the bannermen received stipends three times as high as those of Chinese soldiers and caused a marked flaccidity of their original martial spirit. They soon became the parasites on the society and led a life of gambling and leisure.

In conclusion ¡§the Twenty Crimes of Heshen¡¨ gives to some degree information on the nature and causes of decline in Qing government towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign, including corruption, administrative inefficiency, the nature of a one-man-rule government and favouritism. From this document, historian can see that relying solely on the tie to Emperor Qianlong, Heshen was able to manipulate affairs of state, abuse power and build a lavishly furnished estate for himself and his family. The 0 points reveals the signs of decline towards the end of Qianlong¡¦s reign.

A new war had just set in and Zeus had asked Odysseus to

find a new crew and set out for the war.

In his town of Ithaca, Odysseus found twenty new men who were willing to help him. One of these men was selected specially by Athena. This mans name was Odilion, one of Athenas best mortal assistant. Before he sets off on his on his journey, Athena hands him a deerskin knapsack and says that inside is the only thing that he will need to survive his journey. Kindly, he took the bag and said goodbye to Penelope and Telemachus and sets off to the town of Crete. Along the way, the twenty-one men were walking along a mountain and got caught in an avalanche. They searched for a sign of life around them, but none existed. The men were cold and weather beaten so Odysseus made a house out of ice and snow. The men all pushed inside, shivering and hungry.Odysseus remembered Athenas word about the bag.He opened the bag and found one golden apple. One apple,he said, how can we survive off of one golden apple? Frustrated, he put the apple back into the bag and decided that they should get some sleep. As they all laid there, Odysseus heard a howling noise. He looked out of the house and standing about three feet away was a ten foot gorilla with the head of a moose. He had heard of this monster before, they called him the ape of the mountain. He thumped toward the house and kicked it into pieces. The men awoke and took out their spears and ran after the beast, but he just stood there. The men threw their spears so fast they looked like men diving off of cliffs into glimmering lakes below. Not a twitch or howl arose when the spears struck him, the men were astounded. Odilion spoke up, men, we must make a run for it, we alone cant kill this beast, we dont stand a chance! Odysseus knew that if they did not run now, they would never make it to Crete. Alright, run as fast as you can and find a place where the monster wont reach us. They ran as fast as they could, but the ape overpowered them. Left and right he was stomping on his men. They found a cave and ran in as far back as they cold. The monster was so big, he couldnt fit inside. They all thought hard of what to do. Then Odysseus remembered what Athena had said about the bag. So he took out the apple and threw it outside the cave. The monster ate it in one bite and suddenly they heard a thundering thump like an earthquake in the sky when Zeus is outraged. They had killed him with Athenas apple. The men that were left stepped out of the cave and looked around, it looked as though thirty or forty men had been ripped to shreds. The snow , covered red in blood, body part splattered everywhere. Seven of his best men lay there, bones crushed into pieces as if they had fallen 00 feet of a cliff into rocks and splattered into the ground, they lay there, innocent souls taken by the beast. As Dawn spread out her fingertips of rose, the rest of the men set off for their journey to Crete, and so began the new adventures of Odysseus

I know there are many different beliefs in this world, but to me, when I die that’s it. This belief is exactly why it is important for me to make the most of my life and try to enjoy life. Unlike the lives of many others in this world, when I am old enough to look back at my days, I want to know that I had fun, was successful in my career, and didn’t stop enjoying myself just because I became older.

Life is a very precious commodity, and should not be taken for granted, it should be cherished and enjoyed. Having fun should be at the top of everyone’s list, and it definitely is at the top of mine. If a person is not enjoying themselves at least a little then that person is not really living. People are different, so it does not matter what someone does for fun, but I like to go to the lake and be around the water. Wakeboarding, water-skiing, and the other water activities I do like wake-skating, is the way I get my kicks and giggles. The secret to life is to have fun and not spend life worrying.

Everyone knows that in order to survive life, they have to work, unless they are inherently rich. I would like to work with money and make decisions about money, something like an investment banker. However, that does not sound extremely exciting to me, and contradicts the secret of life. But, I am going to have to work for someone else for awhile and suck it up until I save enough money to start my own business. My dream job would be to own a marina on a major lake. I know I can handle it to, because I

have been at the lake and have gone to many marinas ever since I was a child. My marina would have boat slips for rent, clothes sales, and a simple restaurant. This would be the ultimate job for me, being around the lake, which I enjoy, for the rest of my life.

A lot of times when people get older, after they retire, they just stop living. My Grandma and Grandpa are both 8 years old and very active. They go on about two trips a year, usually overseas, and can still keep up with others. This is exactly how I would like to be, health permitting. I would like to travel the world, and see different kinds of people and lifestyles. My plan is to live to my fullest until I die.

Hopefully I’ll have the chance to live my dream, and own a Marina. I know that if I am not able to I will still find something that interests me. The secret of life is to be happy and have fun no matter what. I am going to see that I had fun, was successful, and still kept going as I got older, when I look back at my life. I am going to live to my fullest.

Hillary Clinton is for education and national health care reform, is not a racist, gun control, helmet and seat-belt laws, she obviously does not harbor any anti-women sentiments, and is sometimes considered to be a socialist. These are all things I wouldn’t mind having said of me.

Step

I got a whole right! The Electoral College is good because it ensures that the candidate who is best for every single person in every part of the US is chosen to win the presidency. It is also good because when elections are contested or very close, the Electoral College serves as a built-in tie breaker or re-vote. Cons for the Electoral College are that there is nothing to keep the Electors from voting their opinion of who should win, and not how the people in their district voted and also people argue that because of technology and globalization, the popular vote should be the determining factor as people are becoming less segregated by state lines.

Democratic frontrunners Carol Braun, Wesley Clark, Howard Dean, John Edwards, Dick Gephardt, Bob Graham, John Kerry, Dennis Kucinich, Joe Lieberman, Al Sharpton

I think the winner of the Democratic primaries will be Howard Dean. He was the first candidate to begin campaigning and he really has unique things to say. Democrats need a song to sing after their embarrassing performances in elections recently, and many say that is because they took no big stands. Democrats did not take a united stand on any issues really, and offered nothing new to bring to the table. Many in fact, only said that they did not like Bush. Dean however, paints himself as the outsider. Many are tired of all the political drama and game-playing. He comes off as a straight-shooter. In Vermont he guaranteed health care to all children and completely turned around their fiscal budget. He has helped out poor communities to help better their schools and approves of same-sex marriage. He does not have the most money, but he has the press, and sometimes that is all you need.

Larry Sabato deems the primary as a toss-up. What a wimp!

Hypnosis

I. Introduction

What is the hypnosis?

I decided to choose this topic because I’ve always been interested in psychology as hypnosis can apply to this field in additional it can serve for many purposes in many differing fields. People are skeptical of the accuracy of hypnotism arguing that it doesn’t always show positive results and shouldn’t be certified as a bona fide practice. Others reflect a medieval attitude towards hypnotism and believe it is totally unethical and dangerous to be able to control and alter another human being’s state of consciousness. Whatever attitude a person may have towards hypnotism, it is a controversial practice which is both intriguing and fascinating. My speech explores into the wonder of the study of this technique and why it is so beneficial.

II. Main Body

What is the history of hypnosis?

The history of hypnosis has been around as long as man has been able to communicate dating back to the Egyptians and Greeks where evidence shows that it was used by priests and doctors as a means to help the sick cast out evil spirits.

The first man who first brought hypnosis to the attention of the medical community was an Austrian physician, Franz Anton Mesmer. Dr. Mesmer believed that good health was a result of the harmonious ebb and flow movement of a magnetic fluid within the body, and that disease was the result of a blockage of this fluid. He called his discovery “animal magnetism”. He believed that the body of a patient could be manipulated by magnetized iron rods or plates which he was able to use successfully in curing a number of disorders by stroking the magnet over the diseased area of the sick persons body.

It was not until the 1840s that hypnosis got its name. James Braid, a well known Manchester surgeon, was the first to realize that animal magnetism does not have to involve mysterious magnetic fluids yet he discovered that people could go into a trance if they simply fixated their eyes on a bright object, like a silver watch.

It was not until 155 that hypnosis was acknowledged and certified as a practice by the British medical community closely followed in 158 by the American medical community.

How does hypnosis work?

During hypnosis the person enters a relaxed state, in which respiration, heart and metabolic rates slow down and outside stimuli are eliminated. The conscious part of our mind is by-passed thus leaving the unconscious, or sub-conscious mind open and responsive to suggestion.

III. Supporting Facts

How has hypnosis impacted the psychology, medical, and police community?

Practitioners in the healing arts use it to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being believing that through the hypnotic state, we can create positive changes in our lives such as quitting smoking, losing weight, getting over past experiences, accessing troubling thoughts, enhancing creativity and productivity, getting over a phobia such as flying or insects, stopping nail biting, bed wetting and limiting many other excessive behavioral patterns. In the medical field many doctors are now grateful that they can use hypnosis with great success to replace anesthesia during surgery to reduce pain and bleeding during childbirth and dental procedures. Police investigators use hypnosis to retrieve memories of potential witnesses and victims whom cannot recall thoughts or events which may be too traumatic to consciously access.

IV. Conclusion

How can hypnotism apply to healthy, normal and balanced people like us?

Although most of us here I hope are healthy, normal and balanced people, hypnotism can help us with bad habits and phobias. If you are skeptical if hypnotism will work on you, studies show that 0% of the world’s population can be hypnotized easily when following the right procedures. People who can concentrate deeply, use their imaginations, and relax can be are responsive to hypnotism. You can buy self improvement tapes online or from a clinic which is basically subliminal messaging mostly used to eliminate a bad habit or change behavior patterns or you can visit a hypnotherapist. The average visit lasts just under an hour and ranges from $50 to $150 per visit. The use of hypnosis today can be a major help to anyone who wants to enrich their life or improve their health so I recommend it anyone.

“My Family”

By Trino Murillo 1

The most important thing in my life is my family because they always take care of me, and because we spend a real quality time every day, and because Ive learned everything from them. I think that my family is the most important thing in my life because they are the only thing that I need.

I think that they are a great family because they care about me; they are always there when I need them, or when I am sick. I think that they care about me because they always advice me when I do something wrong, or when I’m in danger. They simply protect me, like a normal and lovely family

One of the greatest things about my family is that we spend a quality time together as a family. We talk about interesting topics, and we share our opinions. But the most important time that we spend together is when we do some outdoor activities together. We are an excellent family, and we are very close

My family is important to me because I’ve learned everything from them. They taught me how to be a good person, and they taught me how to be a good student. They also showed me the road that I have to follow in this life; my family is my guide in this life.

I think that my family is everything in my life, because of the support that they have given me. They are everything to me because they took care of me when I was sick, they taught me everything, and we spend a great time as a family, that’s why my family is the most important thing in my life.

Maturing is a significant part of the childrens growing up. Jem, as the older child, matures much faster than his sister, Scout, in both behaviour and understanding. At the beginning of the story, we see Jem as a boy of childish thoughts and behaviour. He invents games and amuses himself by getting involved in the Boo Radleys mystery. He believes that Boo is chained to his bed and his description of Boo is reasonable only to a child. His childish courage is clearly revealed when he carries out the dare of touching Boos house. He also practises intolerance when he tramples on Mrs Duboses flowers because she has called Atticus awful names like nigger-lover.

However, as the story unfolds, Jem gradually outgrows his childishness through various events in the novel. Being four years older than Scout, he is beginning to be aware of the age gap between them. For instance, he has to be bribed by Atticus to take Scout on her first day of school. He is careful to explain that during school hours…I (Scout) was to leave him alone. He becomes critical in his attitude towards her as a girl and when he and Dill go together, he excludes Scout from their activities. Instead of decrying the opposite sex, he now tells her, Its time you started bein a girl and acting right.

Jem is growing in sensitivity all the time. This can be seen when he stops Scout from embarrassing Dill by probing into his family life. Jem later initiates to write a thank-you note for the gifts Boo leaves in the tree trunk and is deeply upset when the knot-hole is sealed up, though he takes care to cry about it in private.

Intellectually alert, Jem involves himself closely in the developments of the trial, understanding most of the arguments. When Tom is found guilty, he suffers from bitter disillusionment, which is part of the experience of growing up. He tells Scout sadly, I think Im beginning to understand why Boo Radleys stayed shut up in the house all this time…Its because he wants to stay inside. This shows that he is beginning to understand the truth of life and shows the fact that he is able to see things from another persons point of view.

Jems sense of responsibility and his ability to sense the right grow as the story progresses. He reports the matter to Atticus when Dill is found under Scouts bed, as he understands that it is important that an adult knows of the unexpected presence of Dill. He insists on going to the jail when he senses that his father may be in danger. He is able to recognise the gravity of the situation outside the jail; thus he refuses to desert his father, even when he is ordered to do so.

Jem finally displays his tremendous courage when he protects Scout from Bob Ewells attack, which consequently caused him to break his arm. One feels that Jem has grown up, especially when Scout says that he is becoming almost as good as Atticus at making you feel right when things went wrong.

Like Jem, Scout also gradually modifies her thinking and behaviour as she grows older. We can see her grow up from a tomboyish and aggressive girl who often got into fights to one who is able to practise self-control and tact in her relationship with others.

In the beginning, we see Scouts insensitive questioning of Dill about his father. However, after lessons taught by Atticus, she has learnt a great deal of sensitivity and self-control. When her brother is moody, she recalls how as Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jems skin and walk around in it. She also turns away from Cecil Jacobs taunts, feeling that if I fought Cecil, I would let Atticus down. This shows that she carefully remembers how Atticus has taught her to hold your head high and keep those fists down.

Calpurnia, as the housekeeper of the Finches, plays an important part in the growing up of the children by educating them the correct moral values. She teaches Scout about behaviour when she tells Scout off because she has criticised young Walter Cunninghams eating habits. Scout remembers how I told Calpurnia to just wait. Id fixed her. This shows the immature and rebellious thinking of Scout. However, during Scouts first year in school when she spends less time with Jem, she frequents the kitchen. As a result, this tomboy begins to think that there was some skill involved in being a girl.

Through Aunt Alexandras stay at the Finches place, Scout also changes her tomboyish attitude to more refined and lady-like. In the beginning, when her aunt calls her in to be introduced to her guests, she is usually mud-splashed or covered with sand. As times passes, a more mature Scout is seen offering to carry in the coffee pitcher at one of her aunts gatherings, aware that all ladies smell heavenly. She behaves with great femininity when she replies her ambition is to be just a lady after being questioned about her future. The greatest advance in her relationship with the aunt occurs when at a missionary circle gathering, news is brought of Tom Robinsons death, and Scout thinks, If Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I. Scout has realised that ladylike behaviour can be more than a superficial facade; it can demonstrate strength of character.

The trial creates a deep impact on Scout and jolts her out of immaturity. Through this and her conversation with Dolphus Raymond outside the court, she learns about prejudice and the simple hell people give other people. She has realised the truth about the trial and that her taking of the verdict at face value was wrong. Like Dill and Jem, she has seen into the secret courts of mens heart.

Finally, Scouts ability to be a lady is longer doubted when one sees the kindness she extends to Boo, once the inspirer of so much fear, after he has saved herself and Jem from Bob Ewell. Her sensitivity is revealed once again when she was beginning to learn his (Boo) body English. She understands from Boos little actions and gestures that he wants to see Jem again before he leaves. She also retains his dignity on the way home by ensuring that he appears to be leading her rather than the other way round. Scout expresses deep regret that we had never put back into the tree what we took out of it we had given him nothing. This shows that she has learnt to appreciate peoples kindness and courtesy through the process of growing up.

In conclusion, growing up is indeed an important theme of the novel. Through the process of growing up, both Jem and Scout have matured mentally and emotionally after several lessons of life that happen throughout the novel.

Fly Away Peter

Through Symbolism we can understand the Novel Fly Away Peter. Do you agree?

David Malouf uses symbolism frequently in the text, Fly Away Peter. The choice of the object of symbolisation enables us to understand the feelings present in the novel, Fly Away Peter. The points being focused on is his Symbolism with the birds, the waves, Imogen Hardcourt’s photography, and the biplane.

David Malouf uses symbolism to show life’s perpetuity, how life continues on. A powerful example of this would be the migrational patterns of the birds. Regardless of time the birds continued about their own business at their own pace. ‘But more reassuring than all this-the places, the stories of life that was continuous elsewhere- a kind of private reassurance for himself alone, was the presence of the birds, that allowed Jim Saddler to make a map in his head of how the parts in his life were connected, there and here, and to find his way back at times to a natural cycle of things that the birds still followed undisturbed’. This quote supports that David Malouf uses the bird’s to symbolise life’s perpetuity, but he also uses other characters in the book to support this symbolism. The man Jim Saddler walked past whilst heading to the front was digging. The locals also, all of them continued on with their lives whilst the war was occurring right on their doorstep. These two different examples also support perpetual life, their life does go on.No matter what was going on around them they continued about their own business.

essay writing service

The waves in chapter eighteen symbolise life. As the wave peaks it has its moment, just like life does. But the waves are in a continuous cycle. Just like life. Life is the same cycle; you live for a brief moment then die. Imogen Hardcourt talks about the waves while she is standing on the beach watching them, and tells us about how waves are like life. It has its moment and then it’s gone, each wave is unique, Just like each life.

Imogen Hardcourt’s photography was a strong form of symbolism linking the birds and Jim. This is spoken about in chapters 17 and 18.She speaks of brief moments in life and how cameras can catch them. The camera caught the sandpiper and held those brief, single moments of gladness. The sandpiper was in her life for a short moment, in the lens of that camera that belonged to her. She took the picture to remember it by because she probably would never see that same bird again. This is how Imogen Hardcourt felt about Jim Saddler. She had pictures in her mind, which she would remember Jim Saddler by. Jim Saddler was in her eyes for a brief moment, in the lens of her mental camera, like the sandpiper in the lens and then they left. Never to come back. You can’t hold on to things forever and Imogen’s photography represents this.

Another example of Symbolism would be the plane. The plane symbolised the war, the technology makes this effect on the world. It helped us understand the upcoming war and its affect on the rest of the world. The war was a disturbance to the world and it was out of place. The plane was described similarly. ‘It sat there…out of place’ (p1) where we see that the plane doesn’t fit in with the beauty of the rest of the world. It also appeared as ‘ a big shadow’ the war creates a shadow but of a different reason, the war shadows the world with a sense of uneasiness and conflict. It was also a ‘bulk lack of..disturbance and new’(p). It disturbed the peacefulness, just like the war disturbed all the peace in the world. If you think more about these forms of symbolism you will see that these different parts in the book ‘Fly Away Peter’ connect to each other. The bird’s symbolism for perpetual life, and are disturbed by the plane, ‘its bulk, the lack………a disturbance and new.’ (Pg ). The plane is a symbol of war. Therefore the war disturbs life’s perpetuity.

It is proven that you could agree that David Malouf uses symbolism to help us understand the true meaning of the book. The objects used for symbolism are real symbols in our world. Birds do show that life goes on, Planes do remind us of war because of the technological advancements, photo’s do capture single, special moments in life, and waves, and life is a continuous cycle.

Research Project on Propane

Propane has many names it is referred to. Most of them are common sense to chemistry type people, yet other people have no ides where they came up with those odd names. We just learned how to name compounds like propane. With that I know have a much more understanding for the names given to propane. Dimethyl methane, n-Propane, and simple propane are all equal to one compound. Propane has a very simple model. This model consists of three carbons with associated hydrogen atoms to complete the octet rule. So finishing that association you end with CH8.

Propane is a unique product that comes from natural gas. Propane is a colorless, gaseous hydrocarbon, of the methane series. Taking natural gas and increasing the pressure and decreasing the temperature at which all other substances separate from the propane produce this gas.

Propane was discovered by Dr. Walter Snelling, who was trying to find the reason why gasoline was evaporating at such a high rate in 110. He realized that the evaporating gases where propane, butane and other hydrocarbons. Using coil from an hot water heater and other pieces of equipment in his laborty he separated the gasoline into its separate liquids and gasses. By 11 propane was already cooking food for families all over. The first car powered by propane was in 11. Dr. Snelling sold his propane patent to Frank Phillips for $50,000 and now it is over $8 million in America alone.

Business, industries and farms all have a high use for propane. There are many reasons that propane works out so well for everyone, like that fact that it can e supplied almost anywhere and anytime. Since it leaves no residue when it is burned it easily meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s clean air standards. Propane can also be stored forever, unlike gasoline and fuel oil, which deteriorates over time. Space heating has nearly 60% of the U.S.’s commercial and industrial buildings depend on gas heat. Propan-fueled systems are especially efficient for cafeterias, commercial laundries, manufactured process and other uses. When cooking propane is a nice gas to use because of it cleanness and heat control. Forklifts use propane-powered engines because of the less cost and less to fuel then diesel or electric models. Half of all farms in the United states rely on propane for a wide range of uses. These includeflame weeding, pest contrl, crop drying, tobacco curing , poultry and pig brooding , stock tank heating, and spce heating in greenhouses. Propane also fuels tractors, trucks, standby generators and pumps.

Being exposed to very high concentrations can cause you to become dizzy, lightheaded, and to pass out. With extremely high concentration may cause death by suffocation from lack of oxygen. Contact with liquid propane can cause frostbite to occur. Propane cannot be ingested like most other fuels, since it is vaporized internally when released from its container. Leaks do not form puddles, because propane dissipates into the air.

Propane costs depend on many factors. Lately the cost is around $1.50 or so. But it depends on where you are getting it from and what season it is. With colder seasons the price may be lowered because so many people are buying it to heat their houses, yet in the summer the cost may be higher because less people are buying any, it all depends on the common law of supply and demand. Yet when there is a lot of farmers needing the propane, like in a drought, the cost may be higher depending on what season this happens during.

There are three types of storage for propane inventories primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary storage consists of refinery, gas plant, pipelines and bulk terminal stocks. Secondary storage consists primarily of large, pressurized above-ground tanks located at approximately 5,000 retail dealers throughout the U.S. Tertiary storage consists of small aboveground tanks located mostly at residences and commercial establishments. Transporting this gas is done very precisely with pipelines from all over to meet with rail tank cars, local delivery trucks, inland watery barges, and many ocean tankers.

Mesopotamia and Egypt were two civilizations that while similar in some ways, also had many differences. Not only did they differ in the geographical layout of the civilization, but also in many aspects of basic life. Although different in many aspects of life, there are also several similarities between the two civilizations.

Mesopotamia was originally focused in the river-valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, but the civilization eventually spread throughout an entire region. The Mesopotamia culture was affected by the erratic and sometimes destructive flooding from the two rivers. In contrast, the Egyptian civilization remained focused on the Nile River and the surrounding deserts. The Egyptian culture viewed the Nile River as a source of unending bounty to be received with thanks, not as a menacing cause of floods.

Unlike Mesopotamia, Egypt moved almost directly from the pre-civilization state to a civilization ruled by a large government without passing through the city-state phase. Because the culture was unified around the Nile river, the authoritarian government in Egypt had fewer problems with its political structure than did Mesopotamia. Because it was considered to b a city-state, Mesopotamian provided the opportunity for councils and other participatory government structures.

Egyptian culture was influenced to some degree by Mesopotamia, Egypt separated from Mesopotamia in many ways other than politics. The Sumerian cuneiform alphabet developed by Mesopotamia was not accepted by the Egyptians; instead, they developed the hieroglyphic alphabet. In both Mesopotamia and Egypt, the system of writing was complex and therefore mainly used by the upper classes. Through the development of the papyrus, the Egyptians were able to reduce the cost of the writing materials and it developed extensive record keeping practices. Egypt, did not however establish the epic literary tradition that was prevalent in Mesopotamia.

Science in the Egyptian civilization was based on mathematics and astronomy, and was less advanced than the science of Mesopotamia. Egypt was first to establish the calendar of the solar year. The Egyptians used a calendar based on the natural cycles and it suggests that they were trying to predict the cycle of Nile flooding. The Egyptians also made important advances in medicine, some of which were passed to the Greeks and then to the Middle Eastern and European civilizations.

North Carolina is in a dilemma of deciding on weather or not to have a state Lottery. The reason North Carolina is debating on this topic is because our school education funds arent getting enough revenue. If the state had a lottery most of the money can be used for our education programs. The surrounding states Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia all have state lotteries in which most of the revenue goes to the education funds. North Carolinians are traveling to these states ever day to play the lottery when they could be able to play it in their on state. Most North Carolinians (60-70%) including the governor and state legislatures support the state lottery for educational and other benefits as well. But most of the people also say that lottery is gambling, and gambling is morally wrong. The revenue that would be used for education is already in the making, without having a lottery to help it. Other states recommend that North Carolina not to join the lottery because they think the surrounding states are enough and we couldnt make enough revenue as Mike Easily says we can. Easily states that, “North Carolina lottery would generate $1.5 billion in gross sales annually, or $500 per household-netting $500 million in revenue.” But the actually estimated revenue would be around $00 million. There are states that provide state lottery to all or part of education, and if North Carolina was to have lottery it would be the rd state. Here below is a spreadsheet of how the lottery money is split up into different categories.

STATES WINNER PAYOUT OPERATING EXPENSES FUNDED PROGRAMS

California 5% 10% 8%

Florida 50% 1% 8%

Georgia 5% 18% 0%

Virginia 56% 11% %

Texas 58% 1% 0%

Ohio 58% % %

Michigan 5% 1% 4%

The table above shows different categories of what the winner of the lottery would get, the amount of money to advertise or etc., and the amount of money that would go to the funded programs. North Carolina would take the average of these numbers to use as there own. The least amount of the revenue would be around 5% that would help fund the education programs. If the lottery didnt go in effect, sources say that the best way to gain money for our state is to resort to other things. North Carolina could open privately owned casinos, horse tracks, and even distribute out poker machines. The public is also supporting these ideas as well because they are a sure profit, and the lottery is a gamble for profit.

The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences Ive had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team. Everyone had there own agendas and goals that they wanted to accomplish. In addition, if we were down everyone would try to put the blame on someone else instead of trying to lift one another up. It took us a while, but we finnaly learned that we must ban together as one. This year we are playing as a team and winning games. To often in life people tend to act like this, pulling someone down to make themselves look good for ther own personal gratifacation. People could learn from this mistake that my team made last year and start helping one another. So fellow students I say to you, when you are in a jam and breaking into a cold sweat and your first desire is to give up or quit, rethink the problem. Then be up and about the task at hand. When you try and reach out to give others a helping hand you not only help them, but you will be giving yourself a boost too.

Shadowing Americas Truth

The photograph depicting America’s way of life during the Great Depression after an Ohio flood is extremely contrast. The wall behind the line of Americans paints America as being a trouble free, worriless land where the citizens drive new cars, wear smiling faces, and have no problems. Happy and carefree, with the family dog even getting to ride along and hang its head out the window. A typical, picture perfect family. The backdrop points out that America has the, “Worlds Highest Standard of Living”, and that, “There’s no way like the American way.” I believe that this picture depicts a lie in the face of truth.

In contrast of this fairytale- like setting there is a trail of black Americans standing in a line at an emergency relief station, directly in front of the portrait. A line of Americans seeking help homeless, hungry, or maybe even to the extent of trying to stay alive. Whatever their needs, these Americans are nothing like the American family portrayed behind them.

Another distinct factor in this photograph is that the people standing in the relief line are black; yet the joyful American family in the background is white. The Ohio flood obviously effected the black community more harshly. Although the Great Depression dramatically effected both races the black Americans of the time were also struggling with there social as well as economic stature in society. The picture would not hold the impact that it does if the American victims had been white rather than black. The impact is greater because the victims are black because the contradiction between the victims and the portrait of the white family, point out a really blunt unequal stature held at that time by black men and women.

I notice also in the photograph that one of the persons standing in the line, a black man, is looking back at the wall behind him. I can not help but wonder what must be going through his mind. How is he missing out on the “easy life” perse, that America seems to offer? If we got the opinion from him, or any other black American standing in that relief line of the painting behind them, I fell their feelings toward it would probably be along the lines of resentment and disbelief. Resentment in the fact that this picture is without a doubt out of place, and it could only be understandable to have resentment toward a picture that portrays happiness in an area with such a case of despair. Disbelief, again in the fact that the painting is located where it is. And, also because these people know that the state of life portrayed is non-existing where they live. I know they must also notice that the family in the painting is white and wonder if the future holds any hope for a change. And if the social and economic stature of whites and blacks would ever really be equal.

The picture was probably put up before the flood, but because of the fact that the black Americans were held at a lower economic status. Meaning that the Great Depression put a struggle upon black Americans seeking any type of advancements in the labor industry. It almost seems that the picture is trying to portray a country of wellness and prosperity that has been shadowed by both the affects of the Great Depression and in this particular picture, the aftermath of the Ohio flood. It depicts a lie behind the face of truth. The truth being the black Americans standing in line providing the proof that America is not economically flourishing, or performing to its highest standards of living (American Dreams, pg. 18).
