Surroundings of My Life

Every time I open the door to my room, waves of hot and musty scents of sweat and cheap candles burning fill my nose. I have a contentious debate with myself whether or not to open my closet. The future is approaching fast and tomorrow’s organizations are being built today. Existing standards will no longer be effective or will be modified to meet tomorrow’s trends. Management and leadership will change to meet the demands of future employees. I will differentiate between management and leadership in the following paragraphs. I will also describe emerging trends and will indicate how the future will affect the four functions of management.

Understanding the roles of leaders and management is very important. A leader provides a vision and motivates the employee to pursue that vision. We can define leadership as “influencing others to work willingly toward achieving objectives”(Dessler, 00, p. 41). Managing involves planning, organizing, leadings and controlling people or groups of people to achieve the company’s objectives.

Leadership

Leaders fill many roles. They interact with and motivate employees, they manage groups and teams, they also manage organization and cultural change. When conflicts arise within a group, the leader must analyze the situation and resolve the issue without disrupting the day-to-day business operations

The “command and control” approach appears to be ineffective and outdated. This style of leadership appears to be ineffective in motivating today’s employees. Today’s employees wish to be treated as equals and desire a relationship with their

leaders that is “indicative of mutual trust, friendship, support, respect and warmth”(Dessler, 00, p. 45).

Exerting leadership “means championing a new idea and having the vision and the drive and courage, conviction and self confidence to convince others to work with you to implement that vision”(Dessler, 00, p. 41).

Management

The responsibility of management is to plan, organize, lead and control people or

group of people within an organization so that the organization achieves its goals. Managers implement a plan of action and then they make a decision how they are going the achieve the desired results. Managers then begin organizing by deciding what functions need to be performed and who will have the responsibility to complete these tasks. Management will use controls to determine whether or not their plan was successful.

Future of management and leadership

In this rapidly changing economy where employees are expected to possess higher level of skills, I believe managers will be eliminated and there will be a greater demand for leaders. Change is inevitable in organizations, managing this change is essential. Transformational leadership is the most effective style to lead change. Transformational leaders focus on a vision and they encourage employees to develop problem solving techniques and resolve issues independently. With a transformational leader and highly skilled employees, management can be eliminated with greater emphasis being placed on the leader and the employees to make decisions on their own.

Future of planning, organizing, leading and controlling

Linking the present and future together in our minds and actions will be essential to planning for the future. Too many business stumble as they seem to neglect future demands. In planning for the future, foresight will be required to determine trends and changing technology. Competition will force businesses to downsize and to partner with other businesses of similar interests or markets. Planning for the future will be more challenging as businesses strive to stay ahead of technology and as they chase market trends.

Organizing in the future will change to compliment the dexterity of the workforce. Organization without boundaries will be the standard set in the company. Departments will be interrelated with all employees working to reach the same goal

Employees will be customer-driven and not management-driven.

Future leading will follow the transformational style of leadership. The transformational leader will stimulate the employees and encourage them to “approach old and familiar problems in new ways”(Dessler, 00, p. 441). This will “enable employees to question their own beliefs and use creative ways to solve problems by themselves”(Dessler, 00, p. 441). Transformational leadership will encourage brainstorming on the part of employees. With a transformational leadership and the assistance of employees, the transformational leader will be innovative and initiate change by leading changes in mission, and structure.

Future controls will follow the traditional controls of business with emphasis being placed on diagnostic control systems. Due to competition and changing markets, companies will have to run efficiently and lean. They will have to establish sales budgets, operating budgets, and production and materials budgets to determine whether or not they are running efficiently. It is in the controls that the business can determine whether or not they have been successful in achieving their goals.

Conclusion.

Businesses are currently positioned between the second “Industrial Revolution and the emerging third wave Knowledge Revolution”. What worked in the past is no longer applicable. Austen also added in money and courtship to her novel, as suggested by Tanner, to show potential problems that can occur in that social stature at that time period. Both focus towards the goal of achieving a satisfactory marriage. Marriage is a way society secures its own continuity and minimizes the possibility of anything approaching violent charge. Tanner also suggests that readers, at first, would see this novel’s title as Dignity and Perception, and Austen has the readers learn to see the proper title Pride and Prejudice, because her book is most importantly about prejudging and rejudging. Tanner suggests that a very important part of the book is how it touches on some aspects of the whole problem of knowledge. Tanner then brings in John Locke’s view of knowledge. According to Locke, it is “worth while to search out the bounds between opinion and knowledge; and examine by what measures, in things where of we have no certain knowledge, we out to regulate our assent and moderate our persuasion” (106). He uses Locke’s view to help support his belief of the importance of knowledge.

Tanner puts an emphasis on the first impressions in Austen’s novel. Elizabeth’s lively

mind allows her to the quality of registering consciousness to affect the intensity of the registered impressions. She is capable both of complex impressions and of complex ideas. This liveliness is also one of the qualities which wins Darcy to her. According to Tanner, without experience there’s no reason and without impressions there’s no experience. This suggests the particular importance of first impressions, because, although they may need consecutive correction, complements, and so on, they constitute the beginning of experience. However, Tanner explains that opinions are constantly changing as people’s behavior appears in a different light. Elizabeth most importantly comes “to wish that her former opinions had been more reasonable, her expressions more moderate” (111-11). The passages in Austen’s novel, according to Tanner, describing her changing reaction to Darcy’s letter are among the most important in the book.

The first half of Pride and Prejudice, according to Tanner, has been a dramatic performance, but in the second half a mixture of narrative, summary, and scene carries the plot towards the conclusion. As he says, “this reveals that Austen felt able to take advantage both of scenic representation and of authorial omniscience using third-person narrative” (11). But there is another interesting aspect of the combination of the dramatic and the epistolary, particularly bearing in mind that the word performance fades after Elizabeth receives Darcy’s letter. If the human being is to be fully human, then to the energy of performance must be added the wisdom of reflection. Tanner suggests that Austen believed in the value of social rituals such as balls, dinners, and evening entertainments. Within these social rituals, people meet for the first time, and first impressions happen.

The characters in the novel have a major influence on the ideas presented by Austen. Tanner begins to evaluate each character and explaining why they help support Austen’s ideas. Mr. Bennet ignores his fatherly role by always taking refuge in his library, and Mrs. Bennet looses herself in her performance. These gestures show disengagement from the necessary

rituals of family and society. The two extremes in the novel are Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Mary Bennet. They both find themselves superior to people who they also see as being useless. Lady Catherine thinks this because of her social stature, and Mary Bennet thinks this because of her intellectual superiority. Darcy changes from being just like Lady Catherine to being in harmony with his reflecting self at the end of the novel. Jane Bennet is incapable of role distance, but she has such a generous and high-minded conception of the roles she has to perform that she strikes us at all times as being both sensitive and sincere. The same could be said of Mr. Bingley because he shows us so much vulnerability. Elizabeth shows us that she can perform all the roles through her irony in the situations presented to her.

There is another aspect to the problems which can be posed by lack of social space. In a clearly stratified class society, such as Austen shows, there are invisible restrictions, boundaries, and separations, which the properly deferential person will not dare to traverse. According to Tanner, “There are quite a number of malicious remarks about people in trade made by some of the members of the landed aristocracy” (18). In this society, as in any highly structured society, it is a matter of some moment just who may be connected to whom. One of the gratifications of the book is that Elizabeth and Darcy seem to demonstrate that it is still possible for individuals to make new connections in defiance of society. Tanner says that Austen portrays “a society which stresses social control over individual ecstasy, formality over informality, sartorial neatness over bodily abandon, and alert consciousness over the more Romantic states of reverie and trance” (10). Her society is concentrated on how men and women may live in harmony with each other. All this, according to Tanner, influenced the notion of love and its relationship to marriage.

Elizabeth’s quality of liveliness is what Darcy is said to lack, and it is the main quality that Elizabeth will bring to their marriage, according to Tanner. Social rules tend to fix people in groups. Elizabeth is happy to leave the social group if it means she can laugh and live. Tanner says marriage is a part of the social grouping and is also a restriction. Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth through her playfulness and her ability to not have society control her. Society depends on the tension between playfulness and regulation. “In their gradual coming together and Darcy’s persistent desire for Elizabeth we do witness the perennial yearning of perfect symmetry for the asymmetrical, the appeal which ‘playfulness’ has for ‘regulation’, the irresistible attraction of the freely rambling individual for the rigidified upholder of the group” (16). The satisfaction produced by the match is generated by the happily united Elizabeth and Darcy by the end of the book. According to Tanner, in the figure of Elizabeth Bennet, Austen shows us energy attempting to find a valid mod of existence within society.

Tanner strikes up a good point when he starts his article with the goals of a satisfactory marriage. I agree with Tanner when he suggests that money is a problem that needs to be overcome before entering into a successful marriage. However, I disagree with his idea of readers calling the book Dignity and Perception. When I read the book, I automatically saw the title Pride and Prejudice being relevant to the book, how Elizabeth had to overcome her prejudice against Darcy, and Darcy had to overcome his pride to create the ideal marriage between the two of them at the end of the novel.

I agree with Tanner’s emphasis on first impressions in the novel. And by using Elizabeth to support this point was a good idea considering the entire book is based on the actions and thoughts of first impressions, especially hers. I disagree, however, with Tanner when he suggests the book is broken up into a drama section and a plot and summary section. I believe the whole novel has a plot in some way or another and is entirely filled with drama; otherwise the book wouldn’t be as interesting to read as it was for me. I agree with his view that this particular society focuses on balls, dinners, and entertainment to meet with others of the same

stature and, at theses function, first impressions are made which is proven by Darcy and Elizabeth. I also agree with Tanner when says that people use theses events as ways of separation. I believe theses events help segregate the social classes so that society can go on functioning the way the aristocracy want it to function.

I agree with Tanner when he suggests that a successful marriage depends on the harmony of men and women in a society, but I also think that it’s about learning to find the harmony so that living together is possible. It’s not as easy as just having the harmony, to me. I agree with Tanner’s use of Elizabeth and Darcy as an example of this harmony. Elizabeth and Darcy both have to come to realize that they have a harmony together, but in order to do that, they had to find that harmony throughout the novel and it wasn’t always easy, just as I suggested.

I agree with most of Tanner’s points. I really disagreed with his view on the plot of the book. He needs to re-read the book and take a good look at all the plots in the first half and the drama in the second half. Overall, I think he makes some very good observations about the novel. I think that he could put some more emphasis on some of those points though, such as the harmony in society.

Equality is something Americans want and supposedly have. The governments in Fahrenheit 451 and Harrison Bergeron take advantage of this desire for equality and use it to oppress the people without them even knowing it. The fantasy of equality appeals to the people because it gives them a false sense of security in that no one would be superior to them. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against. (Fahrenheit 451, p. 58) The government knew this and one major way to keep them all equal, was to keep everyone at a low intelligence level. Not everyone [is] born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. (Fahrenheit 451, p. 58) Fahrenheit 451 destroyed all forms of intellectual education by burning books, while Harrison Bergeron imposed handicaps to prevent a person from thinking. Obviously, as illustrated in both books, it is much easier to make the sharp people dull, rather than making less gifted individuals more intelligent. This also keeps them on a very short leash. It did not take much to keep them in check.

By making everyone equal, the government had also eliminated the element of competition. Diversity keeps everyone in competition. Without competition, the human progression would be much slower and may not even happen at all. In Harrison Bergeron, no one thought of any knew ideas; no one was better than anyone else. …and pretty soon we’d be right back to the Dark Ages again, with everybody competing against everybody else (Harrison Bergeron, p. 16, Elements of Literature Third Course) The same problem of vicissitude is in Fahrenheit 451. With people mindlessly watching television all day, no one had their minds on anything else. The absence of versatility kept them from trying to be better than one another. They didnt think of anything new. Nothing progressed, nothing happened, and no one cared.

The governments in the two stories take different approaches to creating this type of society. The governing body in Fahrenheit 451 banned books and accelerated the pace of ordinary life. Citizens basically had no time to think, as Faber explains on page 84 of the Fahrenheit 451 text. Off-hours, yes. But time to think? If youre not driving a hundred miles an hour, at a clip where you cant think of anything else but the danger, then youre playing some game or sitting in some room where you cant argue with the four-wall televisor. The television is also used a weapon of mass destruction. The television, also known as the parlor, seems to reduce the human mind into a mush, with the consistency similar to oatmeal. All of the different technology built by this new generation was bent towards keeping the mind distracted on useless garbage and keeping people away from intellectual activities.

In Harrison Bergeron, the government used a different approach to provide this perverse sense of equality. In this alternate future of man, handicaps imposed by the government make everyone equal. The severity of each of these handicaps depended on how strong their good traits were. For example, if one were born with a sharp mind, an ear-piece was inserted into your ear that gave an earsplitting noise approximately every 0 seconds to prevent you from thinking on one subject for a enough time for one to develop a strong opinion for something. George was toying with the vague notion that maybe dancers shouldn’t be handicapped. But he didn’t get very far with it before another noise in his ear radio scattered his thoughts. (Harrison Bergeron, p. 14) Instead of burning books, they made it virtually impossible for anyone to read one. If one was beautiful, it would be required to wear a hideous mask at all times. With all these handicaps enforced, no one had the capacity to even think of resisting. Eventually, a character tried to oppose the law in the story, but was immediately shot down. When the shocked people witnessed this, a loud ring went through their ear-pieces, leaving them with no memory of the events that took place.

The government is supposed to keep everyone in society happy. The people want equality, but what happens when it goes too far? Both authors ponder this while exploring and probing America’s fantasy/nightmare. When does equality eventually impose on our constitutional rights or even our fundamental rights (the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness)? When does equality and democracy turn into communism? Could our world end up like the ones in the books? Could our world fog up with ambiguity and turn black and white? When will we forget about the moon?

Methods used - the art of creative accounting

An understanding of the various ways in which the accounts are fudged, is helpful for investors so that they can take a well informed decision. Some of these methods are discussed here

· The big path ploy Taking a large write-off to book costs now and report earnings in the future

· The vendor financing ploy Overstating revenues by lending to the fragile customers so that they buy more products and the sales are boosted

· The before its time ploy Treating pending sales as if they have already occurred and booking sales without reducing the rebates

· The backdoor bargains ploy Promoting sales by buying a big customers stock or granting it cheap warrants

The list is not exhaustive and presents only the most common and easy ways to cook the books. The following is a description of some cases related to misreporting in the Indian context

· Nestle India’s contingency provision swelled from Rs 4.08 crore in 18 to Rs 10.8 crore in 001 accounting for around 1% of Nestle’s total assets. This helped Nestle present a more stable growth in profit in that period and also left a sufficient buffer to cover up for a bad year in future.

· Hindustan Level Limited (HLL) has been using a method of accounting whereby it proportionately allocates the “restructuring charge” (charge related to mergers and disposals etc) to all the four quarters of a year to smoothen the profits. Also interestingly, in the forth quarter HLL finds that the restructuring costs have been lower than estimates and hence it is able to show better figures for year-end profits.

· Proctor and Gamble (P&G) Hygiene division explained its 4% slide in net profits in 001-00 compared to the previous year by mentioning in the annual report that the previous year’s figures contained an exceptional income of Rs 10.05 crore. Interestingly this fact was never mentioned in the annual report of 000-001 when the income was actually realized.

The list of cases that can be presented here is endless and contains renowned companies like Reliance, Ranbaxy, Dr Reddy’s Labs etc. It can be seen that if the so-called pioneers of the industry are indulging in such activities, then the state of affairs at the relatively overlooked second rung companies is not difficult to imagine.

Reasons for the irregularities � Do we look inwards?

It is not difficult to find out the reasons why companies resort to such practices. Some of the explanations are

· Accountability of auditors There is an inherent contradiction in this system that the auditors are paid by the companies themselves and hence the auditors are reluctant to present the actual figures due to the fear of the loss of the long term contact with the company.

· Misplaced priorities Stock markets lay too much emphasis on the short term parameters of performance like ‘sales’ and ‘net profit’ of any company without giving adequate importance to the measures taken by the company to improve long term profitability. So companies are tempted to be short sighted to present good figures for the current period putting at stake the long term profitability of the company.

· Personal gains for Managers Most of the managers at top positions have an ESOP component to their salaries which means that they gain directly by an increase in the share price. So they are tempted to present better figures in the markets.

It is fair that any instance of malpractice by a company should be condemned in the harshest of words and penalized by punitive action. But the markets and investors should also look inwards and see their contribution to the present state of affairs. May be there is a case for giving more importance to the long term steps taken by the company to increase profitability even if these steps result in slightly poor results in the short run.

Possible solutions � Belling the cat

There is an urgent need to restore confidence amongst the investor community by taking immediate and strong actions to curb the use of unfair practices used by companies in reporting financial figures. Some of the areas for improvement and the possible solutions are

· Improving the accountability of audits This can be improved by implementing a system where the auditors are not paid by the companies but by the stock exchanges as they have larger interest in getting the credible figures from the companies. Another option to look for is to implement a system where no auditor is allowed to audit the same company again in the next 5 years so that the business considerations do not come into the picture for the auditors. Also there is a need to stop the consultancy services offered by the auditors as the companies use it as a carrot to make the auditors close their eyes.

· Reworking the standards Indian accounting standards are based on the Companies Act 156. There is a need for a complete overhaul of the accounting standards and making them binding on all audit firms. Best practices from all over the world should be studied and the act should be changed to enforce stricter laws. SEBI should also be a part of this ‘overhaul’ committee to include the interest of the investors.

· New regulator The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has failed miserably in its role as the regulator and there is a need to create a separate regulating body which could comprise members from the RBI, SEBI, Comptroller General of India and of course ICAI. This regulating body should be given adequate power and the authority to enforce the rules of the game.

1. PURCHASED MATERIALS, SUPPLIES AND INBOUND LOGISTICS

Luby’s company policy allows its managers of individual locations to purchase ingredients from vendors of his/her choosing.

. OPERATIONS

Luby’s operates a separate unit which is under the control of the of day-to-day operations, including food purchasing, menu planning, employment and supervision. Approximately eighty percent of all cafeteria management has been employed by Luby’s for over 10 years. Cafeteria managers are given compensation by means of a salary plus bonuses, and a share of the cafeteria’s annual profits regardless of profit changes.

Each cafeteria prepares a substantial portion of the food served daily. Managers supervise the preparation of entrees made throughout the day. In the book Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko, discusses how one can be a part of something but at the same time be viewed as an outsider. Tayo the main character of the book has to deal with this conflict. He was part “white?and part Native American. He was raised into the Native American Customs, however to the Native Americans as well as the “whites?he was considered and outsider. They treated him as if he didn’t belong to either group. Tayo grew up with a lot of confusion in his life. He had to deal with living his life on the hyphen. He was half “white?and half Native American. Due to the fact that these two groups didn’t really get along it was hard for Tayo to truly feel like he was a part of both worlds. Most people who deal with the problem of being a “half breed?or being of mixed races take the most significant aspects of each race and turn it into what I consider to be the “hyphenated race? This hyphenated race consists of people who are part of two or more different races. These people take the most valuable or essential aspects of each culture and combine them into one, creating their own unique culture.

It was hard for Tayo to determine where he belonged because even though he was half “white?the “real?white people treated him as if he was fully Indian. On the other hand the Native Americans treated Tayo as if he wasn’t a part of them but of the white culture. Instead of Tayo having the best of both worlds he had the worst of both worlds. He was like an enemy to both races. After the war many native Americans as well as Tayo felt that they now belonged or rather fit in with the white Americans. However to their dismay the Americans went right back to treating them the same way they did before the war. Tayo felt disappointed because he felt that since he was part of this “American?or “white?race he would be considered equal. After the war Tayo started to realize that this wasn’t the case and that as long as he was even 1% Native American he couldn’t be considered as an equal to the Americans.

“They blamed themselves for losing the new feeling; they never talked about it, but they blamed themselves just like they blamed themselves for losing the land the white people took. They never thought to blame the white people for any of it; they wanted white people as their friends. They never saw that it was the white people who gave them that feeling and it was the white people who took it away again when the war was over.?[1] Tayo didn’t feel like he was a part of either world. The whites as well as the Native Americans looked down on Tayo. He was one of the many Native Americans that stuck to his Native American traditions, and didn’t try to make up excuses for the white people to justify their wrong doings upon the Native Americans. Tayo dealt with the same cultural difficulties as his peers, however he didn’t lose his sense of traditions that the others who had entered the war did. Tayo coped differently than the others. The other peer natives tried to romanticize what had happened. Since they also felt they were now equal or one step closer to being like the whites they tried to copy things the Americans did to give them a better sense of being “white? As an example they all used liquor as an escape from reality and as a “white American?way to heal themselves. . Tayo on the other hand stuck to his old ways and used ceremony as a way to save himself instead of using booze. They justified the wrong doings of the whites and criticized their own beliefs. They felt the whites were better and in order to be friends they had to side with them and do things they way they did. “Belonging was drinking and laughing with the platoon, dancing with blond women, buying drinks for buddies born in Cleveland, Ohio.”[]

One can argue that Tayo even though he belonged to both groups was an outsider looking in on both cultures. It can also be argued that the Native Americans in general were also outsiders looking in because they had to fight for their own land that was seized. They were not the first settlers in this land however they were treated with no respect, nor were they given any rights or freedom in their own land. They fought the war not to take back their land but to try to side and be friend with those who took over their land. Tayo was one of the stronger characters in this book. He didn’t try to be friends with the “whites?and try to justify their actions because he knew what their real intentions were. He knew that the “whites?European settlers were trying to destroy the native culture and take over their land for self-fulfilling purposes. The Americans didn’t look at the land and value it in the same manners that the natives did. “They see no life when they look they see only objects. The world is a dead thing for them.?[]

I think its funny that in America we are taught as students very little about Native Americans. If one was to ask a student today or anyone at that matter what are some of the races that can be seen in America today; very few would mention native Americans. This is strange that the “Americans who came here from England didn’t have enough respect for the native Americans to even put them into our history books. The only thing that I remember about the Native American culture in America was in textbooks relating to Thanksgiving, as well as the negative stereotypes shown on television. I never learned about the good things Native Americans did. If this is supposed to be the land of the free, why is it that America chooses to hide or enslave those whose land it really is?
