I liked Larry LaSalle because he helped the kids when he reopened the wreck center. At the same time I dont like Larry LaSalle because he rapped young girls. He started out as a great friend of young people but later in the story we learned that he was only hanging out with them to get to the girls. I would recomend that teenages read this book because it deals with alot of early relationship issues. I would not recomend this book to younger audiences because I dont think they would be able to relate to all of the issues that are addressed in the story.

Francis Cassavant was a very shy and reserved seventh grade student at St. Judes Parochial School when one day he saw the girl who would change his life forever, Nicole Renard. Nicole would speak to Francis but Francis couldnt find the courage to speak back. After some time he eventually began a friendly relationship with Nicole through a mutual friend. Then through his job at Lauiers Durg Store Francis and Nicole became closer and closer until they finally began a serious relationship.

All of the children in Frenchtown hung out at the newly reopened Wreck Center which was said to be a place of bad luck. Larry LaSalle was the man who reopened the Wreck Center. He taught many classes at the Wreck Center and took a lot of time with the children in Frenchtown. He taught Nicole to dance and Francis to play table tennis and in return became very close to both of them. Then in December 141 Larry volunteered to go to war in W W II and the Wreck Center had to be closed.

While serving in W W II Larry LaSalle captured a enemy machine-gun nest and was awarded the Silver Star for acts of heroism. He came home July , 14, to Frenchtown on furlough. He of course got a heros welcome complete with parade and party. Near the end of the welcoming he took all the children that he used to teach to the Wreck Center for their own party. At the end of the night all that were left was Larry, Francis and Nicole. Larry tried to convince Francis to leave but Nicole asked him to stay. Francis finally walked to the door of the center and hid in a small foyer. While there he heard noises but did not go back into the room where Larry and Nicole were. While in the foyer Francis realized that Larry was raping but didnt do anything about it. Four days later Nicole finally talked to Francis and ended their relationship. Francis inturn wanted to kill himself but his first attempt was not well planned so he didnt go through with it.

Francis decided to forge his birth certificate and enlist in the Army so that he could go to war and be killed. While serving in

W W II Francis threw himself on a gernade but didnt die; his face was blown off and he became a hero because he saved his platoon. He was sent home where he immediately started forming a plot to kill Larry LaSalle and to see Nicole. While in town, trying to be unnoticed, he overheard that Larry was back home and the address where he lived. He went to his house to kill him but Larry told him that he knew he needed to die but would do it himself. On the way out of Larrys apartment building Francis heard a gun shot and knew that Larry was dead. He then went to St. Judes and spoke to an old teacher who told him where to find Nicole. When he found her they talked and rekindled their friendship.

Francis Joseph Cassavant is the main character. He was 15 when the story starts and 18 when the story ends. He went through alot of changes throughout the story. The one thing about him that never changed was the way he felt about a girl named Nicole Renard. He went to a catholic school then joined the Army. He is a round and dynamic character. Nicole Renard was also talked about throughout the book. She moved into Frenchtown, from Albany, New York, with her parents. After awhile she started dating Francis. She was basically a normal teenage girl. She was flat and static. Larry LaSalle was also talked about throughout the story. He was a good person in the beginning of the book, but turned out to be a very bad person in the end. He was also round and dynamic.

A person vs. themselves conflict in the story was when Francis was going to kill himself because his girlfriend broke up with him when he didnt save her from Larry LaSalle. A person vs. person conflict was when Nicole confronted Francis about not helping her when Larry LaSalle attacked her in the wreck center. A person vs. person conflict was when Francis went to Larry LaSalles apartment to kill him for what he did to Nicole.

The story takes place in Frenchtown, a community in Monument. It was before, during and after W W II. The tone of the story was mostly very serious. Sometimes more intense than others. Especially when the person vs. person conflicts occure and when he remembers things about the war.

One example of situational irony in this story was when Francis signed up to go to war so that he would die and unstead got hurt severly and came home a hero. Also situational irony occured when Francis went to Larrys apartment with every intention to kill him and unstead Larry wound up killing himself. Aslo situational irony occured when Francis, who was so devoted to Nicole, actually left her there with Larry even though she ask him not to, but this enclosed verbal irony as well because he didnt actually leave and he said he was going to. Some forshadowing occured in the story when Francis prayed for and said he was going to kill Larry but you still didnt know why. Then the story builds up around Larry, Francis, and Nicole. Symbolism occures in the book in the form of Francis face. It was blown off in an attempt to kill himself to get rid of his guilty feeling for what he let happen.

I believe the personal theme of Heroes is guilt because Francis every goal in the story revolves around what he let happen to Nicole. Him going to war, his face being blown off in an attempted suiside, and him killing Larry LaSalle were all actions that formed from Francis guilt.
