Those unable to see outside the box would be that of the mainstream or majority; they would not question or form many independent ideas, while those that see outside the four corners and ask direct questions would be the non-mainstream or minority. These people, not part of the mainstream are excluded from society for sociological and economical reasons; their thought process is not prefabricated by the majority and they are susceptible to loss of their rights due to both majority rule and lack of representation; for these reasons the minority is most likely to question established truths.

Those not part of the majority are excluded from the mainstream society. People are not part of this "mainstream society" for many reasons; these include choice, economic stability, age, race, gender and culture. Because of their exclusion from the mainstream these people, the minority, see the world from a different point of view; whereas the majority views the world as rule driven and law enforced, where political leaders do everything for the people's best interest. The minority sees the world as having no set rules, the world is a clean sheet of paper for them to formulate their own ideas on; the non-mainstreamer takes in what leaders say and decide whether they want to follow or believe it. Gladwell supports this statement when he says, "these are the kids that are outcasts [or minorities]…the trendsetter kids pick up on things like germ warfare, or terrorism. They pick up on bigger-picture things, whereas the mainstream kids think about being overweight or their grandparents dying…(Gladwell 08)." These mainstream kids are swayed by pictures and trends already set in magazines, like Seventeen and Young and Modern. They are less globally conscious than non-mainstream kids, who are creative and question traditional views resulting in their trendsetting.

People who are members of the minority are also more likely to question these mainstream, socially accepted, truths because majority thought has not prefabricated their thought process. For example imagine having a right, like camping at the local park, but having that taken away because the majority decides that they need to bulldoze the land for a new soccer field. Gladwell said "You see more activists in trendsetters (Gladwell08)," trendsetters being the "outcasts" or minority. "Outcasts" need to let the majority know what they want, and how they feel; the most common way they do this is through public demonstration. Ironically the majority of activists are from the minority, the minority that questions established truths through rally's and protests questioning things like "the explanation given for American participation in the Gulf War (Lindsey/Beach 8)," which they felt was not good enough. The activist minority questions the truths and statements thought of as socially accepted norms or shared rules of behavior.

The minority, the trendsetters, and the non-mainstreamers, those excluded from the majority; question more established truths. They do so because of their exclusion from the mainstream of society, resulting in the ability to have a different outlook or thought process than those of the mainstream. Because they are the minority, they are a smaller group enabling them less votes at elections and other voted on issues.
