"Insomnia" tells the story of Will Dormer, a Los Angeles detective, who travels to Alaska so him and his partner can investigate the vicious murder of a seventeen year old Alaskan girl. Dormer and his partner receive a lead on Walter Finch, an author who was supposedly seeing the victim on a regular basis. Dormer eventually caught Finch trying to steal the victim's backpack and began a vigorous chase after him on a rocky, fog-filled beach. Special effects were used frequently in the film, especially in scenes containing dead bodies. When the victim's dead body was shown, she actually appeared dead. The film did an excellent job of making her up so that she seemed like a rotting body. In the scene where Dormer was chasing Finch, special effects were used for fog. This allowed us to see their facial expressions quite well and gave us an understanding of their feelings. I believe a lot of close-ups were used on Dormer to show us the lines on his face and make us realize how tired he was. When the scene focused on Dormer, the shots were low angle. This gave him a look of power since he was in the control of situation involving the murder of the young girl. At one point the viewers were able to see the world through Dormer's eyes after he hasn't slept for days. The camera was blurry and shaky and everything said had an echo to it.

The songs in the film had no words to them and were very high pitched and creepy. There was a lot of use of violins. This created suspense for the audience.

In French, the word sleep is "dormer". His name may have been Dormer because of that association. At the end of the movie, Dormer and Finch were battling and they both ended up shooting one another at the same time. This symbolized they in a way, they were both the same because they had both killed someone. Finch ended up dying first, which symbolized that he was guilty of murder and killing that young girl was not a mistake.
