Help with essay on Violence on Television

Violence used to promote TV shows.

As I was flicking throw the television networks at home during the week, whether they were CBS, NBC or FOX, they all seemed to have the same purpose. That purpose was to promote their show with what society might call "interesting television" but in reality the networks were only portraying violence.

I watched a full episode of the television show Law and Order. At the end of the show after being attached to the television set for an hour, I was a little shocked as I stopped and realized that in this case Law and Order used minimal violence and used it in an appropriate context. The reality was that it only ended up showcasing the violence in the promotions before the show had aired to pursue the viewers in watching their show. This is a wrong approach for the networks. First, the viewers get a wrong impression of the show. They may believe there is a great deal of action and then become disappointed when they find only two or three minimal scenes spread throughout the course of the story. Sometimes a promotion for a show such as Law and Order, a program which would not appeal to fans looking for fights, guns and mayhem, features what little violence there is in an effort to attract fans that want action in the show.

During the television episode of Law and Order the show contained a robbery, a Kidnapping, a rape, a shooting, and killing. Even though all of these acts occurred during the course of the hour, Law and Order used minimal detail on such violent acts. There was some action during the chasing of the robbers and the killers but did not show the bloody person in the ground.

Two ways of preventing children from viewing violence on TV are the V-chip and the new television ratings system. The V chip is a device that can block transmission of violent programs into homes. The chip would allow parents to prevent a television program from being seen in their homes if a rating system determined that it had a high level of violent or sexually explicit content. The chips are only required on new TV sets. So in homes with multiple television sets, that means each set needs a chip, otherwise children will watch violent programs on an older set. Even then, parents with kids in different age groups will have to choose between their younger and older children as they decide whether to flick the switch each night to prevent them from watching a violent show. It is also only a matter of time before children learn to break the security code of the chip. Parents have to be care full because after all, many Americans rely on their children to set the clocks on their VCRs at home and this will enable the child to set up the chip on their TV in their favor as well.

What are parents to do? Is a question we ask ourselves as parents of small children. Another solution is to limit our children's exposure to these negative influences, and select shows that model positive behavior, such as helping, caring and being considerate of others. Instead of watching cartoons that with out knowing we might think are innocent and fun to watch but also contain characters being smashed or being run over, over and over again and then rising back up with no injuries. We have to explain to our children that this is just fantasy and not reality, that violence can be destructive. Parents also must remember that anything that we limit access to the children, they will want to watch even more, so banning the entire television shows is not going to work.

We as parents have to remember that there are many evil people in this world, and the ease with which people can be exposed to violent fiction doesn't help this at all. Also when it comes down to it, people are people, living in a difficult world, and will use violence to promote their television shows in order to sky-high their ratings. Even though children watch an average of three to four hours of television daily parents should limit the amount of television and spend quality time together reading books or playing sports and being involved in other fun activities that do not involve violence.
