I. Introduction

What is the hypnosis?

I decided to choose this topic because I've always been interested in psychology as hypnosis can apply to this field in additional it can serve for many purposes in many differing fields. People are skeptical of the accuracy of hypnotism arguing that it doesn't always show positive results and shouldn't be certified as a bona fide practice. Others reflect a medieval attitude towards hypnotism and believe it is totally unethical and dangerous to be able to control and alter another human being's state of consciousness. Whatever attitude a person may have towards hypnotism, it is a controversial practice which is both intriguing and fascinating. My speech explores into the wonder of the study of this technique and why it is so beneficial.

II. Main Body

What is the history of hypnosis?

The history of hypnosis has been around as long as man has been able to communicate dating back to the Egyptians and Greeks where evidence shows that it was used by priests and doctors as a means to help the sick cast out evil spirits.

The first man who first brought hypnosis to the attention of the medical community was an Austrian physician, Franz Anton Mesmer. Dr. Mesmer believed that good health was a result of the harmonious ebb and flow movement of a magnetic fluid within the body, and that disease was the result of a blockage of this fluid. He called his discovery "animal magnetism". He believed that the body of a patient could be manipulated by magnetized iron rods or plates which he was able to use successfully in curing a number of disorders by stroking the magnet over the diseased area of the sick persons body.

It was not until the 1840s that hypnosis got its name. James Braid, a well known Manchester surgeon, was the first to realize that animal magnetism does not have to involve mysterious magnetic fluids yet he discovered that people could go into a trance if they simply fixated their eyes on a bright object, like a silver watch.

It was not until 155 that hypnosis was acknowledged and certified as a practice by the British medical community closely followed in 158 by the American medical community.

How does hypnosis work?

During hypnosis the person enters a relaxed state, in which respiration, heart and metabolic rates slow down and outside stimuli are eliminated. The conscious part of our mind is by-passed thus leaving the unconscious, or sub-conscious mind open and responsive to suggestion.

In the medical field many doctors are now grateful that they can use hypnosis with great success to replace anesthesia during surgery to reduce pain and bleeding during childbirth and dental procedures. Police investigators use hypnosis to retrieve memories of potential witnesses and victims whom cannot recall thoughts or events which may be too traumatic to consciously access.
