In recent times money has become an issue for many school systems. Unfortunately, the result to this is that some departments will face budget cuts. Some of these departments already struggle for more money. Therefore, a budget decrease will have a major effect on them. Music in many school systems is a prime example of this. Budgets should not be cut from the music department. Music is just as important as reading, writing, mathematics, and extra circular activities because it brings competition into the arts.

There is a competition that the marching band takes part in that could be compared to the Super bowl. This is the Bands Of America circuit where bands come from all over America to compete against each other. In comparison to the cheerleaders, this competition is not limited to bands from Ohio. In 14, the marching band went to the Grand National championships and placed 4th in finals and won the gold medal in AAA class. There are roughly eighty bands that go to this national championship competition. This was a great achievement however, in no way was the band recognized.

Just like English and Mathematics, music is a class that runs for the entire school year. After marching band season is over, concert band starts. Just like any other subject that is offered, music has an advanced placement course available. There are auditions that are held in the beginning of the course that will place the student in either concert band, which is the lower level or wind ensemble, which is the higher level.

During concert season the band rehearses for the state competition and various concerts that take place during the year. The state competition is very similar to that of marching band except that it is indoors. These competitions could be compared to any academic competition where awards are received for the winner. In many cases these awards would consist of college scholarships.

Scholarships are available to talented musicians. Because there are many musicians, it is somewhat difficult to receive one. The greatest opportunity in competitive marching band is Drum Corps. It is considered to be a professional marching band. It is not limited to just people in high school. It consists of moving away from home for three months of the summer and touring the United States on a bus. While on tour your time is spent practicing and performing in front of thousands of people. There are hundreds of drum corps that come from all over the world including places like Japan and China. The competition ends with a performance that is phenomenal. During retreat after the grand champion is named, all the corps play America the Beautiful and during this fireworks are set off. This is an experience that I have been able to take part in and have never experienced anything else like it, ever.

Overall, music is something that offers so much more than anything else can even imagine. Many of these are experiences of lifetime. Marching band and drum corps bring such an adrenalin rush it is hard to imagine a greater feeling. Music is everywhere and life would not be that same without it.
