Fort Ticonderoga

(Carillon)

Fort Ticonderoga is one of the most interesting forts I have ever heard of. The fort is very old, it is two hundred forty-two years old!

The word or name Ticonderoga means land between waters. One of the reasons the British took on the fort is because of the waterways on three sides of it. Still in the French and Indian war in seventeen seventy-three one of the new British forts at Crown Point there was a very disastrous fire. This made Fort Ticonderoga again the center of British operations. Fort Ticonderoga was a very important fort at that time.

Then in seventeen seventy-five during the revolutionary war Eathen Allen and Becdick Arnold realized that Fort Ticonderoga made an easy target for the Americans. On May 10th of seventeen seventy-five some of the Green Mountain boys took the fort from the British and gave America its first victory in the struggle for independence. Later in the year of seventeen seventy-seven the British forced the Americans to abandon Fort Ticonderoga By cannon. Just two months later the Americans regained the fort.

Then came the year seventeen-ninety and New York State took control of the ruined forts at Ticonderoga and Crown point and gave them to Columbia University and Union College.

Now we are in nineteen o-eight and Steph H.P. Pell a great-grandson of William Ferris Pell found a tinder box among the ruins of the old Ticonderoga fort. This make him have the desire to reconstruct the fort.

Just one year later in nineteen-o-nine his dream was fulfilled and President William Howard Taft celebrated the grand opening of the Ticonderoga museum. An organization known as Fort Ticonderoga Association was formed to assure the continuation of preserving the Fort Ticonderoga Museum.
