The theme of illusion versus reality is very prevalent throughout this play. The most

indulgent of this lifestyle is the main character Willy Loman. His whole life is based on the

illusion that he is successful because he is well-liked and good looking. He raises his two sons

the success he has as a salesman. He expects his sons to follow in his footsteps as well. Biff is

his main concern. Willy looks at Biff to be the one who shines in the business world. "Be liked

and you will never want".(Bedford p.186) Willy tells this to biff while they are talking about

school. The reality is that Willy is not well-liked and not successful but he still tells himself

every week that he'll "knock 'em dead next week". Willy says, "I'm the New England man. I'm

vital in New England". Willy is not as vital as he thinks. He says this to impress his boys.

Willy's dreams and illusions also get in the way of having a normal family. His illusion that Biff

will become a great businessman interferes with the father son relationship. Biff believes that

what his father tells him is true and later in life realizes that Willy has formed Biff's values and

they are not the values Biff believes in. Willy sees himself as one of the founding fathers of the

company he works for and helped name the man who is now his boss. His boss sees his role

differently and soon Willy is without a job and just can't understand it. "When Willy sees how

his illusion of being well-liked is not true, it kills him and ends his emotional life".(Nadi) At the

end of the play, Willy's illusion that if he were to die and Biff received the insurance money,

everything would be better. In reality, the family now has to grieve with their loss and Willy was

left making yet another bad decision. Willy lives in a life of memories of when he talks to his

dead brother Ben who was rich and successful in the diamond industry. Willy is offered a job by

Charles and refuses because of pride. He is blinded by the fact that he still believes himself to be

a successful person who can overcome the situation.

Happy's illusion that Willy will someday give him attention is opposite to the reality that

Willy is favorable to Biff and believes that Biff is the stronger of the two. Happy lives in a

world that he has made up. Telling his family that all the girls want him and that he is the boss

of everything he is involved in. He is constantly trying to get the attention of his father. At the

end when Willy dies, Happy vows to keep his fathers dream alive. Happy is stuck now in the

illusion of pursuing the dream his father had.

Biff was stuck in the shadow of Willy while he was growing up. The older of the two

and a great athlete, Willy paid more attention to Biff. Biff's illusion that he was as great as his

father told him he was would be the downfall of Biff. He later realized that he needed to find out

who he really was. When Biff finally realizes that he has "stolen his way out of every job he

ever had"(Case Study of Death of a Salesman) he meets with his brother and father at a

restaurant to tell them he will no longer be bringing home any prizes. Biff seems to be the only

one who recognizes who he is and that he is "a dime a dozen".(Novel Analysis) He knows that

the dreams he had were the dreams that Willy wanted him to have. The only truth reveled

seemed to come to Biff.

Linda lives in the naïve world of Willy's success that did not exist. Although Willy treats

her poorly sometimes, she looks ahead and is very optimistic. She believes that Willy can do all

the things he says he can. When he doesn't make enough money to really pay the bills she says

"well next week you'll do better".(Bedford p.187)

Willy is pretty much dead when the play starts. The theme of illusion vs. reality is

present at the beginning when Willy tell his wife the car has been going off the shoulder again.

He is actually subconsciously realizing that his life is unsuccessful and possibly on the verge of

committing suicide at this point. In the title, the illusion that Biff is going to become a salesman

like his father, we can interpret this as not the death of Willy but the death of the dream that Biff

is not going to follow in his fathers footsteps. The Loman family is plagued with some type of

illusion throughout the play and the reality of the situation is for the reader to figure out. This is
