John Keats was a misunderstood English Romantic poet in the early Eighteenth century from 175-181. He is known mostly for his letters; which gave critics a better understanding of his poems such as his famous Ode poems. He was not respected until after his death. It is apparent now that he was great "Certainly it is because of his letters that we have a more exact and vivid view of John Keats than of any other Romantic poet" (Dictionary ). John Keats continued writing while struggling to get to the top, in spite of the many obstacles in his life and continued writing. He also had a fight against Tuberculosis beginning in1818, which would one day become the shortcoming of his life (Britannica ), along with many harsh reviews from well-known publishers and a love affair with Fanny that could never be. Early in his writing career Keats met Leigh Hunt an influential editor for the Examiner who published his sonnets "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer" and "O Solitude". This is when Hunt introduced Keats to other poets such as Percy Bysshe Shelley and William Wordsworth; they helped to support Keats in a time of need (Poetry 1). John Keats submitted a "four-thousand-line erotic/allegorical romance" the Endymion to "Two of the most influential critical magazines, Quarterly Review and Blackwood's magazine, attacking the collection" (Dictionary ). "Blackwood's declared Endymion nonsense, recommended that Keats give up poetry" (Dictionary ). Keats was more determined after this to succeed as a poet and did not stop there. In July 180 Keats published Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems. Among them are the unfinished "Hyperion which incorporated three of the finest Ode's in the English language, "Ode on a Grecian Urn," "Ode on Melancholy," and "Ode to a Nightingale"" (Poetry ). This book received much greater praise then the previous one gaining "enthusiastic praise form Hunt, Shelley, Charles Lamb and others" (Poetry ). By this time in Keats's life he was getting ill, his outlook on his progress along with the thought of impacting history was looking grim. Keats wrote two prefaces to the Endymion "I have written to please myself and in hopes to please others, and for love of fame; if I neither please myself. Nor others nor get fame, of what consequence is Phraseology?" and "There is not a fiercer hell than the failure in a great object" (Dictionary 6). It is obvious that this great poet is much harder on himself then any critic could ever be.

"His poetry was known to few and by many of those lightly regarded; unsuspected that the story of his career and unforgettable image of his character had been preserved in his letters" (Dictionary ). It was not until his letter was revealed and published that critics gained a better understanding of the genius that was incorporated into his poetry. He had no idea the outside world would read his letters, or the impact they would have on his writings. The letters were events, feelings, and emotions about his writing and daily life that gave a better knowledge of what was once misunderstood poems. Critics had an enhanced perception from the letters. People such as "Frances Jeffery, [an] influential editor of the Edinburgh Review, wrote a review praising both the new book and Endymion" (Poetry ). Keats wrote the poems to people this is one reason that the letters were so helpful in understanding; he incorporated a back round for the poems in the letters he wrote to people. Some of the most insightful letters were the one's he wrote to Fanny, a women that he loved dearly but could never be with because of his jealousy towards her health and the "conflict between a lover's yearning to possess and be possessed and the artist's fierce need to be free and unattached" (Dictionary 8).
